sleeping time?

western babies/children tend to be put to sleep earlier than most asian counterparts.

my kids (2.5 & 4.5) go to sleep between 7:30-8:30 depending on the day. they have gone to sleep at the same time since they were about 1 year old. my son's teacher was concerned because my son doesn't nap during nap time at school most days. i've explained to her that he hasn't had regular naps since he was about 2.5 yrs old because he goes to bed early. when i told her what time he goes to bed, she was shocked.

i know that i have many students who don't go to bed until 10-12 at night, which to me is shocking.

My son is also going to bed 8.30 maximum, it was around 7.30 when he was 1 yo, now he is nearly 2 and has dinner with us.

i thought going to bed early would be good to by 9pm.. but i worked and really would love to spend more time with her.. i am the one keeping her up and playing with her..:(

that seems to be the reasoning of most "local" parents. they put in long hours and if the kids went to bed early, they would not have any time to see their parents. as i said, i know many toddlers that go to sleep well after 9pm, some as late as midnight.

you really need to do what works for you and your family. just make sure that your child is getting enough sleep overall. most local kids have long naps in the afternoon until they start primary school. i believe this is so that they are able to stay awake later to play with mummy & daddy.

personally, i prefer my kids to go to bed early. it gives me some wind-down time and some alone time with husband before we go to bed ourselves.

My daughter is 18months and goes to bed between 7- 7.30, this has got gradually later from nearer 6.30 when she was younger. It does mean she doesnt get to see daddy on an evening but she is so active all afternoon and refuses a second nap that she can never make it past 7.30.

Plus to be honest, as Cara said, as much as I love my daughter after 12 hours I do look forward to an evening of adult time!

7pm for my 6 month old and 8pm for the 2 year old. The split bedtime gives the older one a little special time with us after her brother is down. I am going back to work shortly and this will not give me much time with them (sometimes none if I am not home in time) but they get up at 6-7am so we do have special time together in the morning.

my 9 months old goes to sleep at 7:30-8pm. After that it's the peaceful quiet adult time I needed most after a crazy day.

my 5 month old goes to bed between 7-8. Some days she refuses her third nap, so she's cranky by 5, so i push her bedtime slightly earlier to about 6.30. i hope to keep the 7pm bedtime for as long as i can! i don't think i can take early mornings and late nights as a stay at home mommy!

my 1 year old goes to bed from 8:45-9:15 on most days...so that daddy can play with her a bit. she sleeps a good 10 hours so not much time to really see her awake in the mornings as hubby leaves home at 7:30....whatever works for your family is what I would say, there really is no right time. my daughter sleeps one long nap in the afternoon (2hours) and I think that is what helps her stay up a little longer to see daddy!

my 1 year old goes to bed at 7pm and wakes around 7 - 7.30am.
my 3.5yr old goes to bed at 7.30pm and wakes at the same time 7ish - 7.30am.
they both take a 2-2.5hr nap during the day

My 9 month old is in bed between 6-7pm, depending on how long his daytime naps have been. He isn't a good napper so can't really stay up much past 7pm. I plan to keep the 7pm bedtime for as long as possible....I need some me time!

My 18 month old sleeps between 7- 7:30pm and wakes up around 6 am. When she was 1 year old she used to sleep between 6:30- 7pm and wake up around 6am.

wow.. as i scroll down to see the replies, i see the timing is getting earlier and earlier..
i tried putting baby to bed at 9.30pm and that also she crawl around here and there till pass midnight. i guess that's because daddy is working in the room with the reading lights on.
aussie mum, what kind of activities do the kids do ,during the day.. ? they seems to be sleeping quite well.

my 17 month old is down for the count by 7-7:15pm... i have read and heard that the 7-7 sleep cycle is most conducive to a child's development (because they do develop and grow in their sleep!). not that my son sleeps til 7am (he's usually up around 6/630am) but it does guarantee him at least 11 hours of sleep every night which i know is good for him because he wakes up so happy and refreshed. also, as many other posters have written, i really really really love that the house is quiet and peaceful by 7pm. my husband and i relish the few hours we get together just the two of us before we hit the sack as well.

For my 8 month old, bedtime routine starts at 7.15 and he`s usually asleep by 8pm. Weekends he usually stays up a bit later due to our own timetable. I have experimented with many bedtimes, but this is the one that most works. My husband isn`t home yet, but as I see it, too bad for him. I`m taking care of him all day every day - I also need a break. As everyone knows, no matter how cute your baby is or how much you love them, bedtime is always a nice part of the day.

My 10 month old lately has been going to bed at around 8pm and out of all her different bedtimes (from 11pm, to 10pm, to 9pm) this actually works best for us. I think she is getting more sleep at night now - although she seems to do better with only one daily nap, I think. From my limited experience, it seems that my daughter generally wakes around the same time regardless of when we put her to bed. And if I put her to bed later, she needs more sleep in the day time. At the moment, my husband isn't seeing her much - he's studying part time for about 4 months... but after his exams, he'll be getting home around 7 or 7:30 again and he'll still be able to see her a bit before bed. That's if I'm still doing the same bedtime routine by then ;)
