Hi all,
I'm getting ready to register for antenatal care but I'm a little unclear about what to do exactly. First--which hospital? I can't find a specific map anywhere that will tell me which hospital I'm supposed to go to. Some friends have told me I"m in the Queen Mary area, and some have said I'm in the Pamela Youde area. Anyone know where to find this? I think I would prefer Queen Mary, actually, so even if I"m not in the official area, is there a way around this?

Second, I know that for QM you actually register at Tsan Yuk, but where do you register for Pamela Youde? Is there a separate facility like at QM?

Third, on Tsan Yuk's website they say you need to bring a note from the doctor confirming pregnancy and due date. Really? I know I'm pregnant, I did the tests, the doctor will just base the due date on the dates I give him for my last period anyway. So do I really have to go to a dr. for this?
If so, how do I go about finding a public doctor? I really don't want to pay a private dr's fees just to have them confirm that I'm pregnant. Believe me, I'm throwing up enough that there's no question :)

Where do you live? I believe that the cut off area between PY and QMH is around Fortress Hill or so. If you call the hospital, you can find out by telling them where you live.

Tsan Yuk, I think there's a number that you call and make the appointment, PY you just can go to the hospital during business hours and register there (specialist outpatient department, 2 floors below the entrance, I think), it's pretty quick. I've done it at both hospitals. If I had a choice, I'd go to PY - but this pregnancy has complications so I had to go back to QM (my first was born there). Why would you prefer QM? It's busier, less cozy, everything takes longer there, and they have no option for semi private rooms like PY - which only cost around $7000 and in my opinion would be worth their weight in gold. I got NO sleep at QM, it's crazily busy and noisy 24 hrs a day. The only benefit is if the baby will need NICU but 99% of babies don't need that anyway... that's just my opinion though ;)

You could go to a GP and have them confirm your pregnancy. I had that done in my first pregnancy and it didn't cost much doing it that way. This one, I went to an obgyn to have them confirm my pregnancy and had them write a letter. I don't know if you can go without a letter since I've never tried...

hi monte, first - congratulations!

i m new here but recently registered @ tsan yuk so will share my experience with you.

yes you do need a doctor's referral letter in order to register, which i got from my company's doctor so it didn't cost me anything.

i called tsan yuk to make appointment after getting the referral letter, and was asked the following:

- home address, to confirm I am at the right hospital, and i also have to bring a proof of address upon registration.

- date of last cycle of period, and I got my first appointment around 10 weeks, which is a saturday morning that a group of new moms are being registered

- am I & my husband HK residents, as I have to show up with HKID and bring along a copy of my husband's if he is not joining the first appointment

so i was there earlier this month for my first appointment, which you open your OB profile with blood test, general Q&A on family medical history etc., it's mainly admin work and you don't get to see a doctor on this visit.

last week i went back for my second appointment where i got to see an intern doctor, was asked more questions on my profile, got another blood test done (as i am a carrier of thalassemia), and got to listen to my baby's heartbeat but no ultrasound scan was done. the process is quick and the nurses / intern were nice, but the waiting time was quite long so it took me about 2hr+ in total.

as QMH is a teaching hospital so usually you don't get to see the senior doctors unless you are the high risk case... i saw some ladies there had to wait even longer to see another doctor in the room at the end to review their file as I was ready to leave.

my next appointment is in 6 weeks and scheduled to be at the government family clinic next to tsan yuk - i guess i am their low risk case... but my 20-week scan is scheduled to be at QMH, so there will be a bit of running around if you choose public health over private where you see the same doctor all the time.

Thanks guys. I'm in Tin Hau, so I guess I'll just call to find out which hospital. As to my preference for QM, it's just based on something they said at Annerley, which is that in their opinion QM is more used to dealing with the requests of Westerners. But it's not a strong preference. When you toured PY, did they have things like birthing balls in the delivery rooms?
by the way, nicole, I got your pm from weeks ago and I'd still love to meet up for a playdate at the park but we've had loads of family around and I've been sick as a dog so there hasn't been much playing. things are better now so maybe next week?
 
I actually didn't tour PY, I was still pretty early when I got transferred to QM but I've had friends who delivered there and they all seemed to have a nicer experience than QM... I think with PY being smaller/not so busy, they're not as stuck on protocol as QM is (QM is all rules rules rules). And like I said the main reason I wanted to go there was for the option of a "special accommodation" room, which also increases visiting hours from 3 hours a day to something like 12 hours a day... MUCH more flexible there, and for an affordable price as well, unlike QM's private rooms.

When i went to register with my second, they said i needed a dr note. so, i just went to the nearest GP. I paid less than $200 for the appt & note. He didn't even do a test!

you could do the same, it doesn't have to be an OBGYN or anything.
