Regarding 3D ultrasound

Hi

I am a first time mom (17weeks pregnant ) . Actually have been going to a doc who only does 2D ultrasounds..we wanted to have a 3d ultrasound done from some other place (without changing our OB ). Can you please suggest some names ( I have read stories of docs being a little unhelpful in case we dont want them to be our OB ). Also needed a suggestion.. have been trying to know the gender of our baby..but everytime he/she gets its umbilical chord in between and thus hides the goods..so would a 3d scan help in anyway..?..
 
if the umbilical cord is blocking the area, won't matter if it is 3d or not.

why not make use of the gov't offering at tsan yuk hospital. it's the women's centre, i can't recall the name off the top of my head. but call tsan yuk and ask to make an appt for a 3d ultrasound and they'll put you through to the right dept. when i did it (5 yrs ago), i think it was about $1000-1500.
 
Hard to tell the sex before 20 weeks I thought. Also, get the 3D US a bit later in pregnancy (after 25 weeks or so) as they look a little scary when they are really small! I didn't much like looking at the early 3D US my OB was doing.
 
i found out the sex for each of my kids at about 1-14 weeks.

personally, i thought it was absolutely amazing to be able to see the development so clearly. i was asked to take part in a study at QMH so got a 3D ultrasound once per month for 6-7 months. i LOVED it! i also really missed it with #2, where we had to splurge and pay for one ourselves.
 
My Dr was able to tell the gender by 16 weeks on a 2D scan. She does not recommend a 3D US until 28 weeks+ as baby looks more like an alien earlier on. The specialist that did the 12 and 20 week scans also said 3D scans are very powerful and should be limited as there's controversy regarding the effect they have on baby (apparently in Australia if a Dr is found to be doing them for non-medical purposes such as to determine the sex or simply see the face, they can lose their license). She recommended we do just one per pregnancy.

On a different note, a friend recommended doing it before baby is too cramped so his/her face is not so squished.

As for the cord being in the way...it doesn't matter if it's 2 or 3D. If it's in the way, it's in the way.
 
i think it really depends on the positioning of your baby. with a 3D scan the chances are better to get an idea of the gender. you can visit Dr Lam Yung Hang for the scan - he's really good...told me the gender of 2 of my babies at 12weeks. scans are a very controversial thing, but if you just want to know the gender then you don't have to worry too much about the down side as you'd only be doing it once. i get scans done once a month and they are to check different growths of the baby - to make sure things are "normal" anyhow, the scan + consultation with Dr Lam should set you back $1700.
 
We had a 4D scan every month, it was a routine part of the regular checkup. I really doubt the Doctor would be doing so if there was any suggestion it was unsafe. Around 28 weeks is generally regarded as the optimal time for nice pictures - before they the baby is a little alien-looking and after then it's often too cramped to get a good picture.

We paid $600 a visit for our private obgen, $1700 sounds pretty expensive! You can try calling Dr Jenny Ng's clinic (Melbourne Plaza, Central - 2523 6888) and see if you can get an appointment. She told us the gender at 16 weeks.
 
I also highly recommend Dr. So Wai Lam in Mongkok, Tel 2390 9230. The ultrasound is 4D as part of the prenatal check-up and its about 700 each visit. I have had 4D at 12 wks and 20 wks and no problem at all with the baby looking alien...I find it quite exciting to track his growth so intimately!
