Reflux - urgently need help!

Dear all,

My baby who is 2 and a half month old (premature baby) has recently been diagnosed with reflux. She arches her back during feeding, cry/scream during and after feeding, poor sleep with constant waking up screaming/crying. I have taken her to see a doctor who has prescribed losec but we are not seeing much improvement. Can anyone please recommend a good paediatrician who specialise in this area? I am extremely upset and want to stop my baby from the pain and to let my baby (and me & rest of family) to have some decent sleep.

Thanks a lot in advance,
Diane

Check with an osteopath. Reflux is sometimes provoked by a shortened muscle linked to the stomach, and the osteopath helps to relieve this muscle.
My son had severe reflux during 3 months, even had to spend 4 days at the hospital as he was such in pain that he would stop breathing, and the reflux stopped after 3 sessions.
I went to IMI, it made wonders on my little boy !
Good luck !

there are a bunch of threads on this website about reflux babies. Our son had it as well for his first 7 months. we too saw an osteopath who helped loosen him up and sleep better through the night so i would also recommend seeing one like frenchy said above. Our son slept at an angle at night, we did more frequent feeds and fed him hypoallergenic formula. We tried baby gaviscon, but it was not strong enough so we got a prescription for zantac which did wonders for our son.

having a baby who has reflux is not easy, but it's especially not easy on the child as they need the sleep the most. Good news is that it they grow out of it!

Good luck!

We saw Caroline Rhodes, a cranial oesteo at the BodyGroup who helped a lot - together with medication (Takepron).

My son also had reflux and it was incredibly hard to see him in pain. Hang in there. Do see an Osteopath. I saw Chung Sze Chan at Central Osteopathy, 2151 2528. She came recommended by couple of friends as well as my naturopath. I very much appreciated her calm energy when I was sleep deprived, irritated and had a screaming baby in my arms.

Different meds work differently on each baby. We went to see Dr. Thondup who does see a lot of children with reflux. He gave Zantac which is a strong medicine but it did not work. I went back to my Dr. (Rulin Fuong) who gave Takepron for keeping the food down and Gaviscon to ease the oesophagus burning and causing pain. This combination worked better. So you might need to try to see what works for your baby.

Sorry to hear you are dealing with reflux, our son had it too, and it was truly awful. We tried Zantac but he hated the taste of it. Losec worked brilliantly but it did take some time to start working. We also introduced solids a little bit early (at 4 months), under doctor's advice and that helped too.

We also saw Caroline Rhodes at the Body Group, but I didn't like her manner. She was not a natural with the baby and she was very critical. Also overpriced in my opinion. We now see Leone Booth, a paediatric osteopath at O, T & P in Wan Chai. She's amazing and the difference in my son is incredible. He is now 10 months old and has not had an episode of reflux for a few months now.

For paediatricians I can recommend Dr Yvonne Ou. I hope you find something that helps soon.

Hi Diane, I know how stressful it is to deal with reflux. I was on the edge of depression as no health professional could give me any sound advice except to prescribe gaviscon (which hardened my baby's poo to the point that she had a sore anus) and zantac (didn't help much either). My baby was throwing up up to 5 times every breasfeed. If you're breastfeeding, maybe you can try cutting out dairy, caffeine (including chocolates, tea and green tea) and alcohol altogether. If you're bottlefeeding, can try hypoallergenic or other types of formulas besides cow's milk formula. Good luck.
