Queen Mary Birth

You will probably get one scan done around 20 weeks. Downs testing is not always done - it depends on the mothers age and also if they have availability. You can wait til your appointment and ask the doctor then about downs testing but if you definitely want it done and they do not offer it to you, you may need to go private for that.

Oh... I thought downs and viability test would be a standard as it is in the UK

Will ask when I get there on Monday then as that's important to us

What if you have a fetus (god forbid) that has serious development problems ? Is that only detected at 20 weeks ?? And then what if you're that far along ?

Since 2011 when i went through the public system for my baby girl born in jan 2012, they offer every woman a free downs screening. But for tbe 20 week morphological scan you'd have to go private unlesd they deem that you particularly need it. This is a change from when i delivered my boy in 2010. So unless they have changed again you should get the free downs scan. In my experience, if theres a scan scheduled you should have an appointmnent slip with ultrasound written. If not, they may schedule it on anpther day but fairly quickly as it should be done by 14 weeks

My experience so far:
I'd had the DS scan and "12 week" scan at 13 weeks and a more in depth scan at 20 weeks. I had an separate appointment for the 20 week scan, not for the "12 week" scan. they asked me if I wanted DS screening by scan or blood test, I said scan and was put in the queue at the end of my first appointment.
I got an appointment about every month after that, then every 2 week from week 30 and I have been told that I will get weekly appointments from week 36.
I have not seen a doctor at every appointments, just the midwife.
However, compared to the UK, I have been seen by a doctor more often (never in UK until the day I gave birth) and I have had more appointments and tests ( such as 2 Glucose tests - none in the UK).
Maybe because I am classed as ancient since I'm 40 this year?
That's with a straightforward pregnancy.
This is not PY but public at QMH. I would imagine they follow a similar protocol though.

i was 35 when i was pregnant - so i registered at the hospital at 8 weeks and they scheduled me for the nt/12 week scan for 12 weeks. As you're not registering until you're already 11 weeks you might find they don't have any spaces available for the nt scan.

The nt scan is done in conjunction with a blood test-so you would have both if they do it. Though there are new blood test only screens which some hospitals might be offering now.

I went to the PY this week for my first appointment, they were incredibly helpful & organised apart from feeling like a bit of an animal being herded from pillar to post in and out of rooms etc.

I got registered for a DS US for next week when I will be almost 12 week
I gave blood which is tested for 6 different things incuding the DS
I also got given my next appointment which is at 14 weeks

Down Syndrome testing is standard. I had mine on my 12th week if I remember it correctly. It was done by blood test and scan. As well as glucose testing and CAS. Every time I have appointment I will see a doctor, not just a midwife. But the thing is every check-up is different doctor. I am now 7 months pregnant. But these month, I have appointment
every week..

Hi everyone,
I hv my first appt at the public hospital in jan (tsan yuk hospital as I m registered at QMH). I wanted to ask is the Down syndrome testing done as a blood test or a scan? If they ask for a preference between the two which one should I opt for?
Also apart from the Down syndrome testing, what are the other tests I can expect from my first visit at the public hospital?
Thanks.

Hi Mariababy
I have had two children at the QMH (antenatal at Tsan Yuk), one in 2008 and another in 2011 and am currently in the system for my third! I had my registration appointment at Tsan Yuk in December 2013 (at 12 weeks) and got the DS scan and blood test done that same day (although sometimes they can't and schedule you another time to come), as well as all the routine blood screens. They do both a combined nuchal scan and blood test for the Downs before 13 weeks 6 days. I believe this is offered to every woman now, regardless of age, but there is no obligation to have it if you don't want to. The routine antenatal screening is explained in the 'pink folder' they give you on the day of your visit - but from memory: blood typing, anemia screening, HIV, syphilis, and a few others. Glucose Tolerance Testing (for Gestational Diabetes) is done later around 28 - 30 weeks. Unless there are complications with your pregnancy you will only get the DS scan done and then the anomaly scan around 20 weeks. I am an ex-nurse and had some minor complications with both my previous pregnancies and feel that the health care there is generally excellent. In all this time, I only had one nurse at the QMH who was rude (which can happen anywhere) but apart from that everyone has been fantastic. Don't be afraid to ask questions but be polite but firm and you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck! :-)

Can anyone here please tell me what public hospital I would be sent to living in mid levels?
Thanks

Can anyone tell me whether QMC does any more scan after the 12 week and 20 week scan? If yes then in which weeks to expect them? Thanks.

Only if they deem it medically necessary. Ie. if they think the baby is measuring too large or small to check on the baby's growth or position of the placenta or if there is some other problem or need to check on the baby/placenta/fluid.
I have gone to a private OB if I want another scan done. With each of my pregnancies I have gotten a 3d/4d scan done privately between about 25 and 30 weeks.

Thanks wozza.
M going to a pvt doc too so will rely on her for further scans. How frequently does one need a scan after the 20 week scan? Every month?

Up to you and your doctor really - whatever you are comfortable with, or can afford to pay! Mine usually offers another every 4 - 6 weeks but only if we want. Also she doesn't recommend getting another scan within 4 weeks of having one done previously ie. after the 20 week scan she said to come back at least 4 weeks after having it done if we want another. We are going to book Annerley for our 3d/4d this time. Last time we used the Hong Kong Prenatal Diagnostic Centre which was fine too. Enjoy!
