I recently have had conversations about children's sleep with two pediatricians - one here and one in the US and both gave advice very similar to that Cara gives above. As most children are in full day school by age 4-5 it is quite normal (and absolutely fine) for naps to be dropped by that age (obviously provided that the child gets a good and full night's rest). Not saying that a nap is necessarily bad, but at least according to our doc, not at all a necessity for most 5 year olds.
