private patient in public hospital....

Back in Oz I had my first baby as a private patient in a public hospital..... i.e. my OB delivered my baby and follow up checks during my 5 day hosp. stay ( emergency C) and I had a private room.

It is the same process for HK??

Also if you have a private room (thinking QMH) can you have visitors at any time you choose?

Thank you!!

as far as i know, there's not much difference pricewise between a private hospital and private patient in a public hospital....
you may want to check it out... see if you can make an appointment with the individual hospitals to have a look and then decide what you want to do.

good luck!

any private patients at QMH?

If so, can you have visitors at any time? (i.e. with own room)

Also, does your OB deliver?

Tks!

A private OB cannot deliver at Queen Mary. The hospital already has their own Drs. If you decide to register at the hospital as a private patient and have your prenatal care done there then you will probably be assigned a Dr who will be with you throughout your pregnancy and delivery.

Have a read through this thread on QM and how to register

Are there any circumstances under which a public patient can have access to a private or semi-private room at QMH? Is it a matter of whether there are any private rooms free? Or does the hospital have a strict policy separating the public and private streams?

from what i recall, if you switch to private when it comes time to deliver, i believe they "back-charge" you. so you end up being charged "private prices" from the beginning....

if i'm wrong in my understanding of this, please someone, correct me!
thanks

How about post-delivery? Say I went into a public ward and decided I wanted to move into a private / semi-private room. I wouldn't mind paying extra for the room, but would they back-charge me for the delivery even if it is already over?

Yes, if you change rooms after the delivery they will charge you private patient rates for the delivery.

Thanks Rani.

Does this mean, based on the charges you quoted, that if I registered as a public patient and had a normal delivery, then I decided to change to a private room, I could end up paying:

$4,800 for a normal delivery plus
$9,060 for three nights in a private room
= $13,860?

I am sure there would be extras if I needed an epidural or other types of medical intervention during delivery, but the point is that depending on availability of rooms, I could treat myself to a private room if the medical costs accrued during delivery are not too high. This would be a pretty good deal... Am I missing something?

I know a couple of people who have stayed in a private room and their final bill have been close to $60K. That's for a c-section. Not sure what we're missing. Maybe Dr's fees, nursery, Paediatrician?

Well, 60K would certainly be a different story to 13K! If anybody has any experiences changing to a private room after being in a general ward at the QM I would love to hear about it -- especially if anyone knows for sure whether this is actually possible, and if so what actual charges are accrued.

Do someone have a reply at this question? I have same problem.....
