Private consultation/delivery in Queen Mary

Hi,

We have just discovered that my wife is 8-week pregnant and we are hoping to go for private consultation in Queen Mary and to give birth there. Anybody has any idea whether it is good to go private in Queen Mary, any suggestions on which doctor to go for and roughly how much it will cost?

Would be grateful if any of you can share your experience as private patients in QM. It would greatly help if we can get some advice and tips on what to expect and watch out for.

Many thanks.

Hi Dad1.

I am off to Queen Mary on Wednesday to get some info on all aspects of the hospital. I am wondering the same things. If you find out anything - please share!!

Hi Dad1 and MisB,
I gave birth last Nov 07 in QMH as private patient. From my experience, you will not be able to book yourself as private patient until your admission day. I was treated just like everyone, going to the assigned check-up dates, to different nurses and very occasional doctors in different maternity centres, Tsan Yuk and one in Wanchai. So when i was due, i admitted myself fearing i may deliver at night, which i did, 2 days early. So then, i got myself a semi-private room. There is only 1 private room and 6 semi. Luckily, no one shared the room with me, so i was alone. I would say, my experience was generally good. One thing is my bill in the end came out around 50,000+. Coz once you got in a private room, they take you as private patient in all things and everything is chargeable. So, essentially, it might be similar to private hospital. I would recommend you to go private in QMH, if u r at risk pregnancy (older/multiple/overdue/baby in wrong position or placenta problem, etc). If not, better to just admit as regular in public ward, you only pay like HK$250-500, or go completely private to private doctor.
If u would like further details, let me know.
Good luck!

Thanks babymama for your sharing. MisB, I hope you will have a fruitful visit.

To my knowledge, and correct me if I am wrong, there is a difference between "giving birth" in a private ward and being taken on as a "private patient" from the start. Starting the regular check-ups in places like Tsan Yuk means you are in the "public queue" - and paying the regular public price.

On the other hand, if you are registered as a private patient in QM, you will first need to identify a doctor/professor to take up you case and he or she will refer you to do the various tests once your consultation process has begun.

While it is quite apparent that switching from the "public" queue just before giving birth to a "private" ward in QM would provide the mother the associated comfort and being the most economic route other than delivering in the general public ward, I guess what you do not get is the choice for a particular doctor/specialist to see through your pregnacy - a plus you will get if you are registered as a private patient from the start.

This is only the impression i got from researchs and word of mouth so far - because we have yet to go for the first consulatiton. Can any of you enlighten us on the following for private patients:

1) Whether the same doctor will see through the course of pregnancy?

2) The usual consultation/test charges aside, will we be billed a huge bill as a private patient if my wife suddenly develops some complications and needs to be admitted for a certain period of time before her baby is due? Or will she be admitted as a general public patient despite she was in private consultation with a QM doctor?

3) When she delivers, will it be the same doctor she has been seeing who will handle the baby's delivery?

4) Will a private/semi-private room be guaranteed for someone who is registered as a private patient from the start rather than, similar to babymama's case, switch in the later stage of the pregnancy?

Looking forward to your views.

Cheers.

Hi Dad1,
I know the difference of being admitted in "private room" and "private patient". But, I don't know if you will be able to book yourself as "private patient" in QM from the start. From my experience, No. But you should probably clarify with QM Obstetric dept. So, to your questions, 1 and 3 - i don't know, but probably NO. Q2 - yes, they will charge for every night and medicines and injections. Q4 - as I remember, you cannot book any private room until you are admitted.

Hi Dad1

I was registered at QM as a private patient initially and later re-register as a public patient after I got my HKID as a public patient you need to provide your proof of address.

Yes you can register as a private patient anytime. You go directly to QM and all you check up are done at QM. As a private patient you can choose the doctor you want and he/she will see you through all your check up and yes he will be the one who deliver the baby.

As a public patient you would need to register at Tsak Yuk and all the check up is done in Tsak Yuk. You see a different doctor everytime you visit and you would never know who deliver your baby.

You can PM me if you need more info.

I hope the info helps.

Thanks for your help, ladies. Will write a few words about our experience after we have been to the first consultation.

jaz1311, thanks.

I saw in the staff list there are several doctors in the team, ie. CP Lee, KY Leung, etc. I have heard all of them are very good. Any comments anyone?

What I am still trying to figure out is the cost for any unexpected admission to the hospital due to complications before the baby is due. While we have budgeted the consultation/test fees, room/delivery charge etc, I am not sure how large the bill will be should my wife is asked to be admitted for any certain period in addition to the perhaps three-day stay before delivery . Will the $2,600 per day charge apply, or will it be possible to switch to the public beds?

Definitely things to check out on my list.

registering with one Dr. at QM???

I thought I would have lots of answers for you (Dad1) as I had similar questions and I have nothing! Well, not completely "nothing"! I need to look into seeing the same doctor each time I go. I am still going to see my private doctor - I have had a few scares in this pregnancy already and I am not scheduled to have a scan until 20 weeks!! I am just over 10. Was advised at Tsan Yuk that I still had to attend the visits there. Can only be admitted to a Private ROom when you check in and if it is available.
All and all, treated just fine and questions were only answered when asked. SO ask, ask, ask!!

Hi Dad1

I am not sure about those doctors you mentioned.

What I know is that if you want to be admitted and pay public charges you would need to register at Tsak Yuk first. The doctors that you see when you are a private patient are normally not the ones you see when you are a public patient.

The Dr Ben Chan that I used to see when I was a private patient from my understanding he only see private patient in QM.

I know the system here sounds very complicated.

Hi Jaz1311,

As a private patient at QM (what I mean is being able to see the same doc throughout the pregnancy and be admitted to the private ward) - do you by any chance know how much the total costs will be? (from pre-natal care to total hospital bill)

Thanks so much in advance.

My wife and I just did the hospital tour at QM and were able to ask very specific questions re. this. At the moment, we are seeing a private obgyn but are planning on delivering in QM public - especially after visiting the hospital. We had a booking at Matilda through our doctor but will be cancelling it.

First of all, don't believe all the horror stories you hear about overcrowding, loud-mouthed mainland chinese, or quality of the mid-wife care. We were very pleasantly surprised at the facilities and the environment. Sure it doesn't have some of the creature comforts of the Matilda, but you're not on holiday! The mid-wives we spoke to were very experienced and helpful.

We were also shown the private rooms. First of all, the private rooms have really gaudy decor - i wouldn't be able to stay in that room for more than a few hours without being violently ill! Secondly, if you are a private patient at QMH, the total cost that you pay will be on par with going to Matilda or Adventist. The charge you for everything seperately, each pre-natal doctors visit, each doctors visit whilst admitted, food, medicines, delivery, and of course the room cost. You can get the number of the accounts department of the QMH to get a full list of standard costs. What we calculated was that a 4 day stay with regular delivery was going to cost approx. HK$60-70k.

The best thing for you to do is to go over to QMH at 11am every saturday for the Obstetrics Ward Tour. They will show you the full private and public facilities and you will have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you wish.

Good luck!

I have seen both Dr Ben Chan and Dr CP Lee before. Well, Professor Lee much more because of complications during my first pregnancy. They are both very good but I do like Dr Lee much more. PM me if you need more details.

I am in my third pregnancy now and have decided to go all private at Sanitorium but Professor Lee still sees me once a mth because of my previous complications.

sorry...just realized this was from a few years back, but very useful, will check out this obstetrics ward tour
