Private care - ultrasounds?

For those who are going the Private route, how many ultrasounds do you usually get? Do you get ultrasounds at each visit?

I received ultrasounds at every visit up to my 20 week visit. I have not had an ultrasound for about 12 weeks and am due for one next week. I am just wondering if this is normal for private doctors in HK?

Thanks.

I had ultrasounds every two weeks until 12 weeks; and then from 12 weeks had one at every visit, i.e. every month, until 20 something weeks; then went to two weeks again with ultrasound at every visit; then at 30 something weeks was every week with ultrasound at every visit.

Thanks for the reply Rebecca. I wonder why my doctor has gone so long without doing an ultrasound - I have to pay for all of them anyway, but I dont know why we have gone 3 months without one. :( At all my appointments for the past 3 months, she feels the tummy, listens to the heartbeat and then that is it.

I think you can ask the Dr for ultrasound Jaetee as some other mothers feel that they are being ripped off if they have u/s at every visit when it is not really necessary (in many Dr's opinion). On the bright side, if you Dr doesn't feel you need the u/s, that means your baby is doing well!!

Thanks Bubbly - so does the "listen to heartbeat and feel the tummy" route sound normal for 20-30 week exams if everything seems okay?

Thanks again.

I felt opposite to Jaetee - I was really concerned that I was getting an ultrasound every visit! My GP back in Canada did ot have a single ultrasound during her 3 pregnancies so I was perturbed that I was getting so many here in HK. However, despite my reservations, I started to look forward to them as it's really amazing to see the development every month, etc. I really do hope that there are no side effects!

Gee, I wonder why my doctor (private practice) doesnt give the ultrasounds at each visit? It sounds like that is abnormal in HK, and that most private doctors do ultrasounds at each visit. :(

one of the reasons I switched OBs

I didn't want ultrasounds at each appointment. That's one of the reasons I switched OBs w/ my first child and used public system w/ my second.

But, I know some women who use the public system who also visited private OBs *because* they wanted more ultrasounds.

So, shop around. You want an OB who will give you one at each appointment, they're out there. You want a more minimalist approach, they're out there too.
