Hi all
I am in desperate need of a massage ( neck, back and shoulders). Can anyone recommend a certified massage place for pregnancy? I'm in happy valley but anywhere on HK island will do. Thanks!!

Hi, I'm a registered massage therapist from Canada and I work at a clinic that includes pregnancy massage as one of it's specialties. We have 2 pregnancy cushions which allow you to safely be on your tummy...it supports the growing belly. We're all qualified there to do pregnancy massage and customize your treatment to what you need. I was pregnant last year and I found the cushion quite comfortable :) It's at the Sutherland-Chan Centre located in Central on 50 Stanley Street on the 19th floor.

Thanks ladies. Another friend recommended Serena too so have booked in with her. Great price too.

My Indonesian helper gives great post-pregnancy massages. Never dared to get her to do one while I was pregnant, as she's not a trained specialist, but in her culture, all the women give each other massages to relieve stress, pain, etc. If you have an Indonesian helper, you should ask her and find out if she know how.

At Sutherland-Chan, we had to undergo at least 2 years of training in Canada to become registered to work in Ontario. Once you get your diploma, you have to do government regulated examinations, both oral and written. In Ontario, most people can have their massages covered by health benefits or they can write it off as a medical expense against their income taxes. There are certain modifications that have to made during massage like avoiding deep pressure around the ankle region because it is a reflex point that can induce labour and also around the sacrum. Also if lying on your back, you need to slightly elevate the right hip so there isn't pressure put on the inferior vena cava which is why the doctor will tell you to avoid lying on your back after around 20 weeks.

I highly recommend Physio in Motion!! I just had my first massage there and I'm 8 months pregnant - wish I discovered it sooner. they have this great bed especially for pregnant women - highly highly recommend it.

I can recommend the massage at balanced health located in central - Universal Trade Centre 3-5 Arbuthnot Road - I had a pregnancy massage there when I was 5 months pregnant and felt great after - also the therapist gave me lots of advice on sleeping positions and massage points - her name is Kari Schroeder - I thought she was really good - also because it is at a health centre some insurance companies may cover the massage :)

I asked at all the above places and apart from Beautescent they charge $850 per hour session, wow! Is this normal?

S-C is 800 for an hour session. It depends what you are looking for. I'm an RMT from Canada that works at S-C and we go to school for 2 years to get a diploma in massage therapy and then do government exams to become registered in Ontario. We undergo a very detailed academic and practical curriculum that involves anatomy, pathology, treatment methods, etc.

I go to Elemis Spa every week since the start of my 3rd trimester. Im in my 38wks now and still going every wk. Josie my therapist is great. They have this special bed with a hole in the middle. Its 780HKD for 50mins and it was worth it.

I found a place called Iyara in the midlevels (also branch in Wan Chai) who are happy to massage pregnant women from around $400. The don't have the massage table with the hole for the tummy, so have to be massaged on your side. I thought they were pretty good.
