Hi all,
I am new and would like to ask about pre-conception multi-vitamins intake. I have bought a pack of (Vitabiotics)Pregnacare Multi-vitamins from Watsons. I am planning to have baby and would like to take folic acid and multi-vitamins. There is enough folic acid but there is a formula of Betcarotene (vit. A 2,333 IU) 4.2 mg. I heard that pregnant woman and planned to preganant woman should be take Vit A supplements. Does that mean it is wholly Betcarotene or part of it is Vit A? And from the web of Vitabiotics, the formula shown is different from the pack I bought. I just want to ask whether anyone has experience of taking multi-vitamins for pre-conception and is it safe to take this brand?
Many thanks!
Christine

It is a different type of vitamin A that is dangerous, called retinol from memory. Beta carotine is a vegetable form of Vit A (carrots!) and is fine.

Hi Christine-
Actually during pregnancy you should not be taking high dose of Vitamin A supplement as there is a theoretic risk of malformations-that is why some systemic and topical Acne medications that are based on Vitamin A acid(like Roaccutane and Retin A) are an absolute no-no during and before pregancy.
A pregnancy supplement should contain no more than 4000 units of Vitamin A, so this one seems fine.I took Materna and was very happy with it.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.sandra

Pregnacare has an advantage over Materna in that it is coated, so easier to swallow if you're feeling queazy.
