I'm looking for a pre-school for my daughter (she'll be 3 next year). As we live in Kowloon, I'm thinking about Australian International, Anfield, YMCA or Deborah. Anyone has kids studying there? May I have your comments please? Thanks.

English Medium Preschools in Kln

If you have no objection to church run schools, you might want to try Kowloon Baptist.
M & 1/F, 300 JUNCTION ROAD, KOWLOON TONG, KOWLOON
Tel. 2336-6213
According to the info. here, it costs about $HK 1,800 per month.

According to here it costs HK$ 2,100 per month.

I had a friend who was not a Christian (she was Hindu, in fact) and she was quite pleased with the kindergarten, not too academic, with a good atmosphere.

When I lived in Tai Wai, I had a neighbor who sent her children to David Exodus Kindergarten. She also liked it quite a bit. So if you live on or near the area (Tai Wai, Sha Tin, Fo Tan) it's quite good.

It's also church associated, but the neighbor I knew who sent her kids there wasn't a "churchy" type and she didn't mention any problem w/ religious instruction.

Re: English Medium Preschools in Kln

Thanks Loupou.

I've never thought of Kowloon Baptist because I've seen very little discussion about this School in the web. So thank you for raising it. I called the School yesterday. They said I could get an application form by mail and so I quickly sent them a request. The tuition is $2,200 x 10. The interview will be scheduled somewhere around March next year. I would have no objection to church run schools because we are Christian. I do would like to pay a visit to the school later to get a feel about it. I read in another forum that the Kowloon Baptist Kindergarten is a very good school too, 100% international. I'd like my child to learn thru play without piles of homework. Therefore I wouldn't go for traditional schools.

I'd consider YMCA because it's a Christian school and it's closer to where I live. I like Anfield because it has Mandarin 30 min. a day but it's not as close and is quite expensive too ($5300 x 10). I'd consider Australian International too because it has a primary section. Well Deborah is within walking distance to where I live. Some friends also suggested the International Christian School but it's a bit far. Since some schools accept application on a first-come-first-served basis, I might need to apply first and then decide later.

My daughter goes to YMCA International Kindergarten and I am quite happy, they learn thru play. The teachers are also good.
Kowloon Baptist is a great school too but they dont focus on phonic much, but the children learn a lot through play.

Thanks bijv. I learnt that the supervisor and quite a few teachers of YMCA left in July this year to start their own business (another playgroup in TST). Does it affect the quality of the kindergarten?

How about their class size? They have max. 30 in a class. Does your daughter get enough attention? How does the teacher manage it? I mean when the children start talking and running around. I think the class size at Kowloon Baptist is also 30. Not sure if additional teachers are allocated to the class.

Side tracking a bit.....

Does anyone have any comments / experience on MONTESSORI preshcools in HK??? ( i think all are located on HK side, none in KLN).

Anyway i have read couple of books on their teaching and love the principles they promote for children ==> "help & teach your children to do things for themselves, rather than do it for them...."

Just wondering if possible for kids to go to MONTESSORI preschool & still join a maintain Chinese / Cantonese primary school afterwards??

:lurking:

hi! u may want to try sunnyside kindergarden (near cox rd and jordan rd). they're very small, the building is quite old but the kids there enjoy the atmosphere alot (my friend's daughter has been there for a year and the first few weeks, she kept saying she will definitely transfer her daughter to another school the next year but she ended up letting her daughter staying because of how much her daughter enjoyed the surroundings and was learing a lot!

Thanks everyone for your advice.

I've applied for both YMCA and Kowloon Baptist for my daughter and the interview should take place somewhere around March or April next year.

It has been our objective to put our daughter to an international school as we want her to learn thru play. To us, learning should be fun. We want her to love learning. Therefore we've never thought about putting her to local schools where the approach was more or less rote-learning and learning for exams.

Recently, my husband and I started thinking about learning Chinese. Being Chinese, we'd want our daughter to know the language, not only speaking but also reading and writing. We'd be happy if she could complete Grade 6 here and we plan to take her back to Canada for high school. This is very different from our original plan. Seems like we want our child to learn thru play and we want her to learn Chinese as well. But most international schools don't offer much Chinese. Should we put her to local school like St. Catherine's then? It's a hard decision for us. Any advice for us?

Would like to hear more comments about Kowloon Baptist Church Kindergarten and YMCA International Kindergarten in TST. Both seem to be good. How would you compare the two? If you had a choice, which one would you prefer and why?

chinese learning too...

i also prefer learning thru play and for me, it's important that my child gets to live the life of a child without spending all the after school time on homework or preparing for tests/exams. however, my husband and i also agree that learning chinese is very important too. recently, a friend of mine told me about a chinese school that has classes structured for children from international schools, and it's in TST east. i haven't called them up yet but their website is www.lukchan.com. i think they have courses for pre-school kids from 4yrs up. this mite be a solution to the 'learning chinese' problem with our kids going to international schools!

(sorry bout the side tracking)

ps my kid is going to sunnyside on jordan road rite now and i'm pretty happy with it. it's not a sophisticated school but i feel that my son is getting ample attention. (my son has been a late learner and he's not as mature as most 2 1/2 yr olds...) :burnout:

Kowloon Baptist Church Kinder or YMCA

My daughter got an offer for the April term in KBCK. I'm worried that she's not ready to start K1 now as she still wants the maid to stay with her during the playgroup at YMCA. If I decline the offer, her spot will be filled by someone on the waiting list. I'm not sure if I should go for it or wait till Aug to join the YMCA. Any advice please.

My little daughter is 22 mths now and I'm looking for a good pre-school for her and which is close to my home (Kowloon Tong)? I also heard that KBCK is good but there's no Chinese to learn. Can anybody give me some suggestion as well? Is it really good to join a playgroup first - my daughter hasn't joined any yet?

KBCK is definately good, dont know if you have taken the admission,
as for YMCA they have 3 teachers in the class between 24 students
the teachers are really helpful, they answer to all your questions.
In K2 they have a full time school also in which they cover lots of activitied like .mandarin, dancing, swimming, golf and gym
my daughter is joining a full time school in K2
the teachers who have left YMCA are from the toddlers world and not
the kidergarten
YMCA kindergarten is getting renovated in Easter so there would be a new look
YMCA has a class starting in April dont know if like to try

You can call me on 61005661 if you need more info.

Hi Bijal,

Many thanks for your reply. I've declined the offer of both KBCK and YMCA for my child to start in April as she's not ready to be left on her own yet. I hope in the coming months, she'll learn to be more independent.

And now I need to decide between KBCK and YMCA for the Sep session. Both are Christian schools. The teachers of both schools seem to be good. The children of both schools seem to be happy. So what's the difference between them? YMCA have better facilities and they offer us the morning session whereas I only get the afternoon session with KBCK. KBCK has 3 teachers for 30 children. When you say KBCK is definitely a good school, what do you mean? Can you share with me more about it? What is the child-centred approach adopted by YMCA? How is it different from the theme-based learning thru play approach by KBCK?

Hello Sandrine,
I would like to asking the question apply KBCK.
Cause I'm headache looking the school for my boy, he is 22 months now,
I want to put him in this school, but I have no idea how to apply and when is the right time to apply thanks alot =)!!

Esseniti,

You can call or write the school to ask for an application form. The address is:
Kowloon Baptist Church Kindergarten
2/F, 300 Junction Road, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon
Tel: (852) 2336-6213 Fax: (852) 2339-2142

KBCK will send you more info then. Priority is given to English-speaking children. Please apply as early as possible. Some parents apply as early as the baby is born. In my case, if I want my child to start in Sep 05, I should have applied before mid 2003 for a place in the morning session. Good luck.

Hi Sandrine,

Thank you for your reply!
I already got the application and a sheet introdution of school.
My boy is 22 months now, he may start attend school on Sept 2006,
is the right time apply for him now?
By the way, could you tell me how about the interview of that school?
Cuz my husband and me are CBC Canadian born Chinese, suppost my boy can attend the local school in Hong Kong, but I want my boy being the happy life when he study.
I want he learning from game and pratice not like local school too stress.... since I was graduated from GOOD HOPE SCHOOL in Hong Kong..... too stressful when I studied. Also I will let my boy back to Canada or State study high school later.......that's why I'm interesting this school..... I do worried they don't accept my boy for the reason he know chinese as well.....

Hi Esseniti,

You can apply now for your boy to start in Apr or Sep 2006. It doesn't matter whether your son knows Cantonese or not but at the interview, I was told that the school expects that the language used at home is English because the school doesn't teach English. My daughter speaks Cantonese too but English is her first language.

Our interview went like this. The interviewer took us to a room where there were some toys. While my daughter was playing, the interviewer chatted with her. After this warm up, we were led to the classroom where my daughter was introduced to the teacher and the children there. My daughter spent perhaps 10 minutes there playing when the interviewer would ask her more questions. The whole process took about half an hour. I'm not sure what questions were asked in the classroom as I wasn't with her. I think she played with some shapes, blocks and playdoughs.

Hope this helps.

Hi Snadrine,

Thank you so much!
How long you have to wait between you send the application and the interview? Cuz I'm not sure does my son ready for the interview.
I worry if I send the application then in the short period need to goes to interview.

Esseniti,

I think they arrange an interview for your child in Feb & May for the Apr & Sep term respectively.

I sent my application late last year and received a standard letter saying that they would contact me again in Jan 2005. In Jan 2005 they sent me a letter again asking if we're still interested, probably because some parents applied really early. After I confirmed my interest, I got an interview in Feb for the session in Apr.
