Post-Pregnancy Fat

I was one of the select few who actually gained while BFing. It was totally my fault, I was eating the wrong foods. Once I realised that hey I CAN BF without eating a couple of pieces of cheesecake a day was a big moment for me ;) .

I did Weight Watchers (they have a programme for nursing mums) and lost 13kg. I gained about 4 back over summer while travelling so I'm back on the diet.

I didn't really do any extra exercise (just my normal walking to and from work, chasing after my kid, walking to the shops etc) but limited my junk intake and the weight came off. It wasn't that hard, I don't know why I took so long to get started...

I envy anyone who can say it wasn't that hard to lose weight. Right now I eat an extremely restricted diet, exercise and am really active--walking all day, every day and on my feet and of course the mommy stuff of chasing after an active kid and I still have that darn 15 kg to lose! But, with the weight watchers thing, I'm totally anti-synthetic sweeteners because of how harmful they can be to the body so I don't think I would be up for WW.

I was lucky with my first as BF'ing really helped me and I lost the 14 kgs I put on by the time my baby was 6 weeks old. I am definitely getting the feeling second time around that (a) I'll end up putting on more weight (boo) and (b) it will not come off so easily. I have used weightwatchers in the past and it is really good and getting you to understand portion control and how many calories food has in it BUT in order to enjoy any treats (soft drink, sweets etc) you really do have to embrace phenalanines (spelling?) which I have objections to. Think that I will need to employ ww following baby #2.

I guess at the end of the day - the old stuff works the best - treats in moderation, exercise, input = output (more exercise = more treats)! Will at least be easier to get out and do some exercise when the weather cools but, like thanka2, I will miss the outdoor pools.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the synthetic sugar thing and WW. But...I'm finding that I really like stevia and its "250?300 times sweeter than sucrose, heat stable, pH stable, and non-fermentable." I really like to bake and right now I'm trying to find stevia in powder form for baking. I have it in concentrate dropper form. It's 100% non-caloric and it's not synthetic. Does anyone know where to buy powdered or grain stevia in HK?

I gained 22kg during my pregnancy! I weighed myself when I got home after 5 nights in hospital (I had an emergency c-section) and I had lost only 7kg and felt so miserable (hormones probably added to it) cos I still looked about 5-6 months preggers. But after 2 months of sleepless nights (and days), exclusive breastfeeding and household chores I had shed another 8kg. Weight loss plateaued at that stage and I thought, the rest ain't gonna go without exercise to burn the fat. Then I found out that my baby's eczema could've been partly attributed to a dairy allergy so I went dairy-free on his paediatrician's advice, which is such a difficult thing to do because so many food items have dairy products in them. Out the window went chocolates, biscuits, cake, pate and even some types of bread because some bakeries use milk powder in them. It's unbelievable how many things contain dairy products even if it's not apparent. I stopped eating Western food in restaurants because of the use of butter/cheese and ate only Chinese/oriental food if we had to get food from outside. But mostly I did the cooking... and lost another 5kg in 3 weeks! Now I'm only 2kg over my pre-pregnancy weight - I think that's the limit, though.

Hello ladies..I just had my baby early June and since then I have lost 54 pounds.....I had an emergencey c-section so I didnt start my diet and exercise untill late July. My secret well I went to HMV and got a video called No more trouble zones by jillian Michaels, Its was so hard at the beginging I couldnt even finish the video and it really focus on the abs....anyways now I finding it easier and Im eating right, no junk food lots of veggies no pork, no sauces etc.....good luck everyone! PS Jillian Michaels is the female trainer from that tv show the biggest loser, thats how i found out about her...she keeps me motivated!!!!

54 lbs .... that's amazing Chrissy2!!

My doc gave me the go-ahead last sat to exercise, and I have been working out everyday since, alternating between gym, running, and yoga. Hopefully I can see some results soon, but in any case, it feels really good to start working those muscles again.

"What To Expect in the First Year" says most mothers lose their pregnancy weight 2 months post delivery. Is this correct?

I don`t remember reading that, but I would imagine it applies to the women who gain the `recommended` amount of weight, therefore, after the baby, placenta and all the water retained in your body, you would lose most of it in the first couple of months. But for those who gain more than what is `recommended` (like me who still has the sweet tooth!), then it would be hard.

My OB told me that I should target 6-9 months for losing all the pregnancy weight. If you lose it all too quickly, then you could get really loose skin she said. I gained around 29-30 pounds during my pregnancy and almost 7 months down the track I only have around 3 pounds to go, but I'm having a hard time with these last 3 pounds. I actually haven't been exercising that much because I'm just too tired all the time. Maybe exercising regularly will help me lose the final 3 pounds. I do watch what I eat and try to eat as healthily as possible, especially since I am still breastfeeding. I work so between working, pumping at work, breastfeeding while at home and taking care of my son while at home (I have a helper, but try my best to take care of my son myself when I am at home), I am extremely busy all the time....I think the key to losing pregnancy weight is to eat a healthy diet and burn calories whatever way you can!

I really doubt it. Generally they say it takes 9 months to put it on and at least 9 to take it off as taking it off is harder than putting it on.

I really think it's a lot harder to lose weight in HK than elsewhere. For example when I'm in Oz I can walk everywhere and I always lose a bit of weight just doing that. Here walking is such a huge and frankly scary effort. Most of the time I don't bother because it's not worth the hassle worrying about getting hit by cars because the paths are either non existent or crappy.

Yeah i thought that is probably not very realistic either :) It did say the 'recommended' weight (like Shenzhennifer mentioned above), but that's 25 - 40 lbs if I remember correctly. Even then, 2 months sound pretty challenging I reckon.

I love walking, esp now that fall is arriving, but yes, the pollution and the crowd makes it crappy.

Well, I didn't gain the "recommended" weight but probably within 2 months I lost at least 25-30 pounds--just water weight and baby weight, I think.

i like to think that age and genetics come into play too - as well as amount of effort... some people ping back into shape in 2 months (not me) others in 2 years (more like me)!

I totally agree. I have a friend a few years younger with obviously AWESOME genes, and after her second, she was back to normal after a couple of months. Grrr....

And there is always liposuction as a last resort, as my DH jokingly suggests he needs some too from all that sympathy eating :)

I always think though - if you are going to have a second (or third or fourth for that matter) why waste all that time and energy to get back to your old self when you are going to gain it all again real soon anyways! My philosophy is to get back to as close to the past as possible, but don't sweat it too much if you are planning on having anymore children!

Yeah, because the minute you say to yourself, hey, I don`t look too bad FINALLY, then you know you`re going to get a positive pregnancy test a week later.

It's funny, I hadn't even considered this philosophy toward shedding pregnancy fat until this past summer when a local lady suggested that to me.

I mulled that over but I've also come to the conclusion that "Carpe Diem", seize the day better applies to my life, although the above argument probably is very comforting to most of us moms who are still working on the ole' post-pregnancy body.

Even if I were planning to have another child (definitely not right now), I don't think I should just settle for less than what I want because I'll have to "lose it later." Probably what I'll do is continue to bust my bum to try to get where I want to go. Then if I were ever to get pregnant again, I would not only be on a decent exercise schedule through the 40 weeks but I would watch every single bite of food that enters my body.

Speaking of watching food, I'm really liking keeping track of my daily food intake at SparkPeople.com.
