Post Natal Depression

Can anyone please recommend a doctor or other professional who can help with post natal depression? Thanks....

Hi there,

it's hard to recommend someone as without knowing the severity there are different options.

I had post natal depression but mine was quite severe and I needed to go on medications, in which case you may want to go to your GP or obstetrician. This helped me a lot. If it is milder you may benefit by talking to someone or even getting out and doing something for yourself. Yvonne Heavyside helped me as well with the referral for a Dr.

If you would like to talk to someone who has been through it I would love to chat. You can send me a PM with you email or number. It's hard to admit to having it as you feel like a failure but it's so much better to sort it out early, before it has lasting effects.

Totally agree.

Laura Brambley and Associates are great - you have options or more like they provide options for those who want them. I saw a local overseas qualified doctor who specialised in depression and he was quick to diagnose and prescribe... which I was totally aversed to. It didn't help the situation but made it worse.

Solved mine - severe case too with counseling without medication.

I asked my counselor once about a group support for such situations and there isn't one in HK. So, if you need support, please PM me too.

Hi Spockey,

I was thinking that a support group would be a great thing in HK. I would have loved that when I was going through it. If there is anyone else out there that is experiencing PND or has gotten through it I think it would be good to try to start something.

Two Dr's who helped me Dr David Owens - awesome guy and Dr Sophie Kennealy- very caring.

hi, i dont have PND (still pregnant) but i had severe pre natal depression and my doctor (Grace CHeung) recommended their
doctor in Central health.

I never went to see as I was too tired and nauseated to make the trip and i got loads better during the 2nd.

But I heard the doctor there is pretty good too. perhaps u might want to check it out.

I really hope you feel better in your own time.

I also recommend Dr. Owens at Owen, Trodd and Partners. He was recommended by a midwife at a well-known baby clinic here in HK. He firstly brought all the chaotic feelings to a halt by prescribing sleeping pills for a few a days so I could get some much needed sleep (I had a colicky baby on top of everything else) and be able to think clearly. Once I caught up on sleep, he asked me back to his office a few days later to set up a game plan for dealing with the depression- usually drugs or behavioral therapy. I took the therapy route first as it was the most "natural" route- if that hadn't worked, I would have gone the drug route. For behavioral & cognitive therapy, I went to see Dr. Simone Blaney. I saw her through my husband's company's employee counselling program, but she might take external patients too.

Hey - one step at a time - go to your GP and get your thyroid and bloods check as this may be the problem and not PND

Thanks so much for the advice ladies. I will go and see Dr Owens and get myself checked out. I don't think that there is anything too severe wrong with me. I am just very negative at the moment and also very grumpy and being a total cow to my poor husband! I really need to start thinking more positively again as I am really "not myself" at present. I think sleep deprivation is the main cause but I really want to get it checked out as it has been a month now...
Thanks again.
