Poo Poo Explosion

My baby boy is now 22 days old. He has been taking breastmilk (50%) with supplement of Japanese Meiji Brand formula (50%) of all feedings everyday. This is because my milk supply is not enough for his whole day feeding. Baby has been having normal wet diaper and poo poo 3-4 times per day. However, in the past few days, he only have poo poo ONCE per day. And that one time poo is so BIG that it just like a big explosion that the diaper is not enough to hold them all. It all came out to the clothes. It may sound exgerrated but this is true. Too much poo poo that I have been from a baby for my whole life. Also, he seem to have problem releasing the poo poo every time. He seem struggling a lot to get it out. I am not sure if it is because of the poo poo or the gas inside of him. I have asked the doctor who said even infant has poo poo once a day is normal. But this is different from what I read from books. Does anybody has similar expereince and is it really normal for infant to have poo poo once per day??

I also asked if baby is constipated but doctor said not likely cos baby's poo poo is in normal texture - yellow and green sticky poo. She said if baby is constipated, the poo poo should be hard. I am concerend if the Meiji formula I am giving to baby has 6mg of iron in it for every 100ml. Will this also cause constipation?? Anybody who has experience with Meiji brand has the same problem with baby?? I am thinking if I should change to a formula with NO IRON so as to avoid possible constipation for baby. When I ask doctor, she always say all formula is the same and no big difference....I will want to get 3rd party opinion and any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

We used to have explosion poos too. It was D's morning poo and it was so bad I wouldn't leave the house until he'd done it. :agree:

my daughter also had poopoo explosion, it was ALLLLL OVER the place. actually every time was poopoo explosion. so we'd hold her between our thighs (her potty position) with towels wrapping her her thighs & bump, while she pooed. but she was purely breastfed, so the poo was very liquid.

you mentioned that he was struggling to get the poo out, but was he crying? if he's not crying, i think it's just he suddenly feels this funny thing coming out of him & he doesn't know what's going on. i think as long as he's not crying, he's fine.

We had this problem with our first baby, and many of my friends did too so it is definitely not unusual. Wearing a nappy which has an elasticated waist helps to reduce leaks onto clothing, or a nappy cover like people put over cloth nappies. (Incidentally, we get much fewer leaks with cloth nappies than we did with disposables.) The problem often goes away when your baby starts solids.

It doesn't sound like constipation if the poo is not hard. But if you are concerned that your baby is uncomfortable, rather than changing formula you could try phoning a La Leche League leader or lactation consultant to help improve your breast milk supply, so that you would be able to reduce or eliminate your reliance on formula. LLL leaders are very experienced with helping mothers to increase their breast milk supply. www.lllhk.org.

My baby is not crying when he poo. But every night, he will make a lot of noise when he try to sleep or poo poo. He will "ah ah" all the time and sometimes sounds like "horse screaming". He will make noise for a few second and then make noise again after 2 minutes and keep on for half an hour. Right before the poo poo come out, he will even put his legs straight and try pushing and his legs kick a lot too. This bother me as I feel like my baby is suffering and I dont know how to help him. Baby does not make these strange noise before until he was around 14 days old. The problem is it is not sure whether the poo poo bother him OR the gas. I burp him 10-15 minutes after every feed but he still has a lot of gas....

my baby also had a lot of gas. everyone said this method works, but i'm not sure. but it sure didn't hurt so maybe you'll wanna try it.

put olive oil between your palms & rub until hot, put your warm palm on top of baby's belly button, it supposedly will help the gas come out. or you can try baby massage his tummy, massage clockwise gently, should help the gas come out.

explosion too

My baby is nearly 2 months and she has explosive outbursts as well.

She also makes a lot of noises before and moves her arms and legs a lot. It is actually quite funny sometimes while she sleeps because you hear her moan and then this explosion, and then she smiles and laughs in her sleep. As long as there is poo poo and the baby is putting on weight, I guess there is nothing to worry about.
