We hope to be moving to HK in May/ June & have a 6 month old baby. I wonder how important air purifiers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers etc are given the pollution in HK

Hoping to live on the Southside

Thanks for your help in advance
Shahira

Dehumidifiers are a must. Your clothes and furniture may get mouldy without one. We also have a humidifiers which we use at night when D has a cold. Air-purifier is not essential for southside.

How effective are the airpurifiers really?
Any recommendations on a good brand to purchase?
Do you have access to the US Consumer's Reports? They have done a lot on air purifiers. I remember that a lot of them emit something harmful as a by-product. Ozone if memory serves me. So you have to be careful. Try this website:

thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Will definately do more research before deciding whether to buy one or not

interesting new air purification device...i'll keep you updated

My husband and I are also really concerned about air quality. I went to the Town Hall meeting about air quality last week and the evidence is pretty damning.
I got in touch with a friend of ours in UK who works in the field and she is sending us some kind of state of the art air purifier from the US. It's apparently not available in Hong Kong yet and much more efficient than the ones you get here. I sent her the specs of the ones I saw in the shops here to check over and she said this one was better.
We take delivery of it next week so I'll give you feedback about how we find it and whether we'd recommend it.

Any idea what it is? I haven't left the US yet and could bring one with me. And does it run on worldwide voltage or just US voltage?

Mammamei,
I'm not sure what model Bumps to Babes sells IQ has a number of different models. We actually have three of the IQ Air HealthPro 150. We have a purifier in both of our kid's bedroom and one in our main living space. Three is probably a bit of overkill, but we feel better by having them. For us, air purifiers were a must when we decided to move to Hong Kong. You can't do to much about the outdoor air quality, but at least we can control the indoor air quality.

We are really happy with the purifiers we bought. When we first moved to HK I had a cronic tickle/cough in my thoat, but it dissappeared when we got the air purifiers. The model we bought is really great, it's got all sorts of program options, so you can program it to automaticly run at different speeds at different times of the day.

We bought ours through Fabri-technic indoor air quality specialists. Their web (and phone no. is) www.28158388.com. Their website has a link to the specs and consumer reviews/awards.

As far as the question "how effective are air purifiers?" It really depends on what you buy.

Hi, I have been looking into air cleaners as we are moving into a new apartment that's good but faces a main road. There is so much information out there that I find it hard to gauge whether air cleaners are really effective against traffic pollutin.
Here is one site I found quite detailed + updated regarding rating purifiers. http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/air-purifiers/index.html

But because much of the research I have found online is about America, it don't seem to relate as much to the pollution faced in HK. (Poss. particles from some traffic fumes just to small for cleaners). The studies seem to suggest air cleaners will clear the larger particles that may cause severe allergies. But that rigid daily cleaning also, allergin filtering, ventilation is the most effective etc.

That article is interesting in comparing aso the types of testing used in different studies, fan speeds versus room size... Seems still IQ products are most expensive and noisy but fall high on the list. I think there is a discount if people buy 10, perhaps we could get a group togther if there are more people buying at the same time? Will probably buy one soon also.

Like Tan, I've found no information on which purifiers are effective against traffic pollution. All the testing seems to be for smoke and allergens, which I think would be a different matter altogether (and aren't a big concern for me). If someone can find some more info on the pollution filtering capabilities, I'll be happy to buy as part of the group of ten!

a really silly question but here goes - can we buy special filters for air conditioning units in HK to limit allergens and dust / that target pollution?
