It's a perfectly good place to go with kids but you may want to go later in the day during summer months. It can get very hot up there.
They have a very cute short film and another show but forgot exactly what it's about. Took my son there for first time when he was 3 and he enjoyed it very much.

It's a good place indeed. I went with my family last week. The environment there is great. The scene is beautiful. And surprisingly there was a Kung-fu show and my son felt exciting. Don't know if your son will love it, but just for you reference.
Went there yesterday. The cable car ride was worth it. Book tickets online to avoid queues as you need to queue up to get on the cable car too. Be prepared for scorching hot sun and midgies. Didn't go for any shows, the above might be referring to the monkey tales show and another one. The shao lin performance did capture my older kids' attention. The climb up to big buddha was over 200 steps. I will definitely do it again with the kids when the weather's milder.
