Phone problem help

Hubby will be working around the world.
and we are having a problem.
He is not a electronic geek. and he would like to send text messages to me in hongkong while he is in other country but lots of new cellphone thats very complicated.
he will be in Japan most of the time. and the phone company says need to buy 3G triband to send text to hongkong because japan using different network service. other company says. u need only triband roaming?....im confused. please help me..

Yes, you do need a 3G phone for Japan. A normal GSM tri band phone will not work in Japan or Korea.
