Pediatrician - at delivery?

Do most people have a pediatrician on "Stand By" at the delivery of the baby, or does the pediatrician just come visit the baby after delivery?

Thanks.

After D was born the mid-wives asked us who our Paeditrician was so they could call her. This was at the Adventist. However, we did get bullied by my ObGyn to call his Pead. buddy. So be firm if you have to, and call the Dr that you have pre-selected.

Thanks Rani - we have someone in mind, but I wasnt sure if we should ask her to "stand by" and be at the birth or not.

Jaetee,

I haven't heard of a Pead being on "stand by". They're normally called after the birth. I guess you could call her and give her a heads-up that you're in labor.

I would check this with the hospital you are having the baby at. Some hospitals require a paediatrician to be at the birth, because of the greater risk to the baby, if you have a C-section.
Best wishes,
SARAH

Pediatricians should be on stand by at complex births - that includes things like breech presentation, multiple births, preterm ,CS and fetal distress.

For a full term , normal, spontaneous , vaginal delivery , it is unnecessary

We had a paediatrician for both births at the Matilda. Good job too with our second birth (third child) as he had passed his meconium in the waters so she had to suction him out. This was not a complex delivery, but I'm glad she was there.
