Opening at private hospitals

Hi there - my wife is due early August. We tried to book Canossa and Adventist Hospital but it is already full. Can I found out whether there is any other way to get a place in these hospitals?

What does your OB say? They are the ones who can best advise.

Having an OB that delivers regularly, or is resident at, your selected hospital ups your chances.

Hi

I know of someone who gave birth in April but did not pay til Feb. She had an OBGYN who is a resident doctor at one of the private hospitals though. So best bet is to find such a doctor.

Our OB informed us that he cant deliver our baby because he is not renewing his insurance. He has given us some OB contacts in Canossa but Canossa is full. I have read in this forum that Adventist is not advisable cos of over booking. Any one can provide advise on Queen Mary? We are registered there but would want to go to a private hospital instead.

Pretty much all the private hospitals (on HK island at least) are full at this point for an August due date. The best you can do is, as noted by others, find a doc who is resident at one or more of the private hospitals and hope that a spot opens up. Some of the hospitals (Matilda is one) have waiting lists, while others don't. Adventist is an excellent facility and doesn't have overbooking issues any more than any of the other private hospitals - they're all booked up months and months in advance and only very rarely do you hear about someone not being able to have their baby at a private hospital AFTER they have been confirmed for a spot and paid the deposit because they are actually over booked.

Lots of posts on here cover the public option and Queen Mary specifically (take a look at the 'Similar Threads' links below). Most people are happy or at least okay with it, and the quality of care is generally quite high, but not nearly as much privacy (or as much visiting time) as you would have in a private hospital.

you will have to find a doctor who is resident at several private hospitals and see who can get you a space...normally they will let you know quick because they know of your urgency to get a space. have you tried Dr Lucy Lord? she has real good connections at Matilda and Adventist....do you have any friends with excellent connections with hospitals? you might need some strings to be pulled for you....Dr Ferguson delivers at Adventist - she might be able to help out...

I would also ask whichever ob/gyn you choose about the Sanatorium in Happy Valley. People don't talk about it as much, but I have heard the care is excellent. My doctor, Dr Ho delivers there as do a number of others. I know a friend who got a booking there at reasonably short notice.

I'm seeing Dr Lam Yung Hang....his partner Dr Marco Wan also delivers there (but I know he is very pro c-section, which I don't know if you want or not)

actually Dr Lam Yung Hang also delivers at the Canossa...you know some doctors have better "connections" with hospitals and even if one doctor tells you it is full, another doctor might in fact be able to get you a room in the hospital that is "full" because of their connections / relationship with the hospital...

Thanks for your replies. Our OBGYN is helping us to deliver at Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital. So now I have to decide whether to go to QM or Adventist. Need your advice.

Just to close the loop on this thread. My wife ended up giving birth in Queen Mary. I would say the quality of the hospital is top notch. Highly recommended!
