Obstetrician that's pro-natural delivery? Dr Ho, Cheung, Gosh?

Hi
I am in my early stages of preganancy, but after reading a few threads, I obvoiusly need to decide on an Obstetrician sooner rather than later to get a hospital booking!

I had my first child naturally in Australia and although it was not an easy delivery, I would like someone that supports natural deliveries for my second. I was told Dr Dawkins was amazing, but is no longer in HK.
I am deciding out of Dr Philip Ho, Grace Cheung and Gosh. Has anyone had Dr Philip Ho for a nautral delivery? There are alot of posts relating to CS with him. I have seen Dr Ho before for Gynaecology visits and found him to be very good.

I know three people that have had Dr Gosh, all with either their second or third, but all had cesareans even though they had previous natural deliveries in their home countries?

Very confused right now, so any help would be appreciated!

I had Dr Ho last year and had a natural delivery. He was great and was also good with liaising with my vascular specialist in Australia about a condition that could have complicated delivery.
We asked him about induction for overdue babies and he said he would rather not induce unless it became medically necesary for the baby, but would happily discuss with us again at past 40 weeks. We only made it to 38 weeks.
He doesn't have the super fab scanning machinese that Dr Do has, but if you want 3D scans he will send you to a colleague for them. He hs a standard 2D machine in his suites.
I always found him to be curteous to both myself and my husband, and to listen and respoond to all my questions and concerns.
While I'm not someone that wants my hand held throughout the pregnancy and labour, I do like to know what's going on.
He respected all of my requests in my labour plan.
His post-delivery care was also very good.
I am happy to reccommend him.

I had a natural delivery with Dr Ghosh, no pain meds (except a bit of gas and air), no intervention, 3.8kg baby, no suggestion of C-section.
I fully expect the same with this next delivery, which will no doubt be a bigger baby.
Some people have said Dr Ghosh is very pro-C-section. He strongly denies this if asked. In fact, gets quite offended about it. But I don't get the impression he's "pro" natural birth either. He didn't push either case with me.

I am a big fan of Dr. Ghosh. Had my first with him at 37 (almost 38) and am back with him again for #2. I found him to be very supportive of natural delivery. Having a c-section was discussed only in my first appointment (at 5 or 6 weeks) when I raised the whole issue of delivery to say that I wanted to have a natural delivery.

I would suggest that you plan to visit all of the OBs you note and then decide. I had planned to see three (including Dr. Ho) but went to Ghosh first and liked him so much that I didn't bother to go to the others.

Like you, I was very concerned that HK OBs would put pressure on for a c-section. In retrospect, I'm not really sure if I got this idea from reading too may concerned posts on GeoBaby while we were trying or from somewhere else. After having had a baby here, I find that I know lots of new mothers and it seems that everyone I've talked to either had a natural delivery, wanted and had a planned c-section or had a real medical need for an emergency c-section.

Good luck in your decision-making!

Would you consider Dr Doo? In my experience, he is pro-vaginal delivery, and never once even mentioned having a caesar to me. He definitely is not one of those HK doctors looking to schedule c-sections for his convenience.

I am really pleased to hear that you had a positive birth experience with Dr Ho. I think I will go with him. His receptionist Kelly and staff have been very helpful and efficient. Thank you for giving me the positive feedback I needed to hear.

I have heard only good things about Dr Gosh, my only concern was the view from others he was more cesarean in approach. Not that I'm against having a CS, only if I need it! Good advice to see a few first, will see Ho and Gosh and decide between the two, thanks.

I haven't considered Dr Doo, mainly becasue I don't know anyone that has used him for obstetrics?
Most of my friends had used Dr Lucy Lord or Dr Sally Fergussen, but they sounded as though they wouldnt be the best fit for me.

Thank you for the wonderful advice, really appreciate it.

Grace Cheung is pro-natural and can't recommend her more highly. The clinic is busy, but the waits have not been that bad, I've never felt rushed with her, and each time, she's taken the time to answer all my questions. I had some complications second time round (both babies delivered with her) but she was great. She's pretty matter-of-fact but very courteous and had a pleasant bedside manner.

But do see a few Obs before you decide! Good luck!

Oops, I've just seen other people posting about bad experiences with Grace Cheung. I can only say what my experiences were, and I guess it's even more important to see a few Obs before you decide!

I haven't heard anything negative about Grace Cheung, I hear she is very good also.
At least I have some choices! Now just have to organise myself and of course, the most important thing, get to 12 weeks!

Sea_Princess, I had a natural delivery with Dr Ho too and will go to him again for my future deliveries.

No pressure whatsoever to do anything beyond my wish (never even discussed C-section). He was always there for me and was very professional.

Thanks again for the information everyone, you've all been so helpful.
Great to hear about your experience with Dr Ho obiwan.
Cheers

i had dr.gosh who was very supportive of my plans for a natural delivery. the only thing about his appts is that you would have to wait for at least 20 minutes each time.

Dr. Doo

I can second what others have said about Dr. Doo. Although I have yet to give birth, I chose him because of what I had heard from others regarding how supportive he was of natural birth. I don't think that we have ever talked about a c-section other than when I asked him to talk about it. He was also recommended to me by my Canadian GP who knew of my strong preference for natural birth.

Just another vote from me for Dr Ho. I had a natural delivery with him for my first baby last year and I'm hoping for a second one in a couple of months time. When things got a little complicated with my son's delivery he made my husband and I feel really safe and that he had it all under control. I have found him excellent at every stage and he has become more friendly as my pregnancies have progressed having been a little reserved to start with. He never even mentioned a c-section to me at any stage, although I too have heard he is excellent at them.

I had Grace Cheung for my second pregnancy (had Dr Dawkins for the first but he went back to Australia). I also recommend her. Nice bedside manner and knows her stuff. I liked Central Health (the clinic were she is based), midwives, nurses and reception staff all lovely but can be hard to get appointments.

I would vote for Dr. Philip Ho, both my babies were delivered by him (natural birth). My husband and I are very confident of his professional manner and practise. Kelly and the rest of the nurses in the clinic are friendly too, especially Kelly whom i'ved called whenever i have any queries, she has never turn me away from any concerns i have. Dr. Ho is not a man with many words, but he is very reassuring in every step of the way during the pregnancy and especially during the labour! We really appreciate Dr. Ho's sense of humour during the labour to help ease the anxiety.
All the best to you...
