Nursery / Nanny in Hong Kong

Good evening everyone,

My husband and I maybe (it looks very promising) relocating to Hong Kong this year (my husband is in the final interview stages) from the UK. I am pregnant with our first child :-)

Please can someone advice if Hong Kong have day nurseries? Also does anyone know how I can find a nanny, are there any agencies you would recommend? The cost of full time nursery or a full time nanny would also be very much appreciated please?

Thank you, Sarah x

You can contact Shirley Robinson at Rent a mum ( 25234868 or [email protected]). She runs a nanny agency.
the cost of a nanny is about 35/40k a month for about 50/60 hours a week.
You can pm me if you want more details about childcare in HK.

Or you hire a full time domestic helper (mostly from the Philippines) for about HK$4000 a month (minimum wage is slightly below that). They should legally live in (but that's not always the case). There are no real nurseries here as most people have helpers. Then at age 2-3 yo they can start preschools, usually starting with a few hours a day at a young age.

The nursery / nanny concept as known in USA / Europe is not very common here.

I was looking for a kindy for my son and realised that there are some full-day creches with extended hours in Hong Kong (such as this one http://www.hkspc.org/php/webcms_en/public/mainpage/ch_school.php3?refid=424) but the dominant language of most of them is Cantonese I think. A Chinese friend of mine also has her third baby - a few months old - in a day creche as she didn't want to hire another helper. So the option of daycare does exist but you have to hunt around and most people find it more convenient to hire a foreign domestic helper.

Service Targets

Babies from newborn to 2 years old

Service Hours

Mondays to Fridays: 8:00am to 6:00pm
Saturdays︰8:00am to 1:00pm
Closed on Sundays and public holidays

Fee

HK$58,740 in annum (paid in 12 months installments)
* Price to be adjusted and approved by Government every September

so, more expensive than having a full-time live in helper, who can also cook & clean for you, if required.

Er, is that from the link I posted? The fees I saw were: "Monthly fee varies from HK$2,544 – 2,975 according to different age group and location." It comes under the EDB voucher scheme and the annual fee for the whole day session is 17,000.

Of course with a helper you get round-the-clock care for your kid and help with other things but there are people who just don't want the helper option. This was for them because a lot of expats just don't know where to find this kind of service.

i think, charade you are looking at the kindergarten section. EDB voucher cannot be used for creche facilities, ONLY for kindergarten, once the child has reached a certain age.

both of my kids had a voucher that we used to apply for their local kindergarten. Our fees for the whole day are much less than $17,000/year... we only pay $7000/year ($700/month) for our daughter's whole-day kindergarten (8am-5:30pm)

Ah, interesting... quite expensive for newborn to 2 years. But workable if you've got 3-5 year-old especially with the extended hours not being so expensive. Again, this is for parents who don't want a helper for whatever reason.
