No Confirmed Hospital Room!!!

I am due in 6 weeks and my doc (Derek Lo) has told me that I do not have a confirmed room on my due date in Canossa due to the high influx of pregnant women. A little troubling as he only delivers in Canossa!! As I had a previous C-section before and am hoping to have a natural this time around, he has advised that if I go into labour prior to my due date, there should not be a problem getting into Canossa as they keep a couple of emergency rooms available. However if I do not go into labour before my due date, his advice is that as I had a previous C-section, I should opt for a C-section again. But since all the bookings for a C-section in Canossa are full for a week after my due date, the best bet is to secure a place at either the Adventist or Mathilda. But as he does not deliver in these two hospitals, I will probably have to go with another doc.

Is anyone else facing a similar issue with regards to hospital rooms? What a nightmare! We did not even need to book rooms when we had number 1 in 2005.

What about still trying for a non-cesarean birth even after your due date? The problem with a pervious cesarean isn?t going over your due date it is being induced. Will the hospital be able to take you as an emergency if you go into labour naturally even after your due date? If yes, then that is what I?d do. Once you are in hospital they will look after you ? even if it turned out that you needed another cesarean.

Yes, I am going to aim for a natural. Based on what the doc says I think it should not be a problem once I go into labour even after my due date. But he advises that I should not go too far beyond my due date.

LL,

What a mess. Have you thought about just going to Queen Mary if Dr Derek can't deliver the baby? Best to call and check if they still have private rooms available.

Dr Derek also refers patients to William So. I saw him once for a check-up and he's ok. He delivers at Matilda, probably also at the Adventist. Another member has written a positive review for him in the directory, when she had her first. She was a bit disappointed with him the 2nd time, as he went on vacation a week before her due date.

Hi LL,

I feel so bad for you especially when your due date is so soon. I'm 6 months pregnant and my doc advised to book a hospital last month. He told me that once the hospital reaches a quota of 100 then they do not accept any new cases. I was a little over 5 months then. I think this is crazy especially when i also didn't have to book the last time which was the same time around your first. I think this is crazy and I don't know if this is because of the high influx of chinese mainlanders coming to hong kong to give births but that's what my doc has said.

shucks, sounds really scary, talk about putting people off of having more kids. whatever happened to the promise that locals should ALWAYS have priority and will be treated? i think they need to make sure that private hospitals adhere to that rule as well. LittleLams, i'm sure it will work out in the end, best of luck!

If I were you, I'd take it up with your doc - he's fluffed it all up for you when it was his responsibility to book you in.

It's not fair that you should be pressured into a C-section for these kind of reasons. Of course, if you do go a week beyond your due date, most docs would recommend a c-section anyway.

Otherwise, I would try to relax. These things tend to work themselves out. You could always show up at the hospital in labour without a booking and hope they'd take you. If the worst came to the worst, go down the road to Queen Mary.

Good luck!

Thanks all. I am now booked for a c-section 6 days after my due date. My doc says that if I go into labour before then, it should not be a problem getting into canossa as they have a couple of emergency rooms for that purpose.

Rani, thanks for your thots on William So. Dr Lo did mention that I could try him at the Adventist or Matilda but somehow I don't think I will feel that comfortable if I were to deliver with a doc that I don't know!

Heads-up for those who are pregnant - confirm a hospital room asap!!!!

hospital pains

I also have a dilemma abt hospital space. my dr. delivers at both Adventist and Canossa and Adventist is my first choice as I delivered there for our first child. However, since the recent high demand for spaces in maternity wards, my dr. recommended that I submit my name to both hosps. Adventist operates on first come first serve basis to only those who register in advance. Canossa only confirms a booking upon payment of a deposit. so, if Adventist doesn't have a spot for me when i am due to deliver (first week of April) then I would have to look to Canossa (provided that i pay the deposit). If i end up going to Adventist and don't go to Canossa, I won't get my deposit back. we're still debating about what to do since Canossa is not hospital of choice and it would seem unfair to have to pay the non-refundable deposit...number 1 was definitely stress free in terms of securing a hospital room...what to do?

I think it is really not very professional for Obs to be recommending their patients to register/book at two hospitals. They are making the situation worse.

Layla if you are registered at the Adventist for around the time of your delivery you will get a bed it just might not be what you wanted (ie not a private room). In fact, the Adventist have a line in their new information pack that Dr's that have significant no shows will have their patient quota reduced - so they are shooting themselves (and their patients) in the foot so to speak.

Kayla,

That is odd. My doc tells me different things - (i) can't double book at two hospitals (which is understandable) and (ii) my doc has booked me into Canossa without requiring me to put down a deposit.

Rani, hoping to go inot labour anytime from 36 weeks onwards as it may be easier if baby is not too big since I had a previous c-section. Thanks for the labour vibes!!

Nula and LittleLams,

I will have to investigate deeper as to whether a deposit is required at Canossa.
It is so stressful now, just having the issue of whether not i'll have a hospital space looming overhead, as if there weren't enough things to take care of in preparing for the baby's actual arrival. wish me luck!

Deposit - Canossa

Canossa will send the confirmation to your O&G doctor, then ask you to pay the deposit for $20K two months in advance.

I also just found out that I do not have a confirmed hospital room. My Dr delivers at the Adventist and Matilda - both are fully booked for April which is when I'm due. I had always intended to deliver at the Matilda but was told that I didn't need to worry about it until I returned from winter holiday at the end of January. My Dr said that when I go into labor, she'll call both and see if they have space, if not then she'll call another Dr who has connections in Kowloon, and if he can't then I'll go to government hospital. Very upsetting to say the least.

we had a related experience that i found puzzling. our doc registered us and several other patients at 16 weeks. we are all due in april.

last week, she told us that our booking was confirmed while that of her other patients was not. she kept saying that we were 'very, very lucky' to get into matilda.

given that we got in while others did not, i wonder if there is some sort of points system where people who take pre-natal courses at the hospital (we are taking 3 separate courses) are given priority enrollment?

this is all very scary. i feel terrible for the moms who did not get into their top choice hospital. that we i also wonder what happened to the government's promise that hk people would be given priority at our hospitals.

given that hk is supposed to have one of the lowest birth rates in the world, this is madness!

bexter - it seems the government have no jurisdiction over the private hospitals. Their promise is that HK residents are promised a bed in a (public) hospital.

So far, I've not heard that this promise has been broken.

I've just booked into the Matilda for a June delivery and like everyone else am unable to be given a confirmed room. Apparently women from Mainland China choose to have babies in Hong Kong nowdays because it's cheaper! I would never have figured that but there you have it.

It's a pretty awful position to be in but my doctor assures me whilst they say this to nearly everyone they haven't yet turned anyone away. Fingers crossed it works out for all of us.
