Hi All,

Just found out that I'm newly pregnant! Although extremely excited feel very overwhelmed. We have been in Hong Kong for just 7 months.

Can someone please explain what is covered in the private hospital maternity package (apart from the room)

Thanks
Julie

In general all normal meds, food, supplies, etc should be covered in the cost.

Extras may include - epidural, anesthesiologist, consults from specialists if required - pediatric and post-natal.

Canossa has a very comprehensive explanation of what it offers:

Canossa Hospital

The Sanitarium also has a fairly comprehensive explanation of what is offered:

???? :: Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (Service Packages: Obstetrics - Caesarean Section Packages)

One thing about Hong Kong that many people don't figure out quickly is that various service charges may vary depending on the type of room you choose. In general expect charges to double when moving from General to Semi-Private to Private. Best to check with your doctor AND the hospital.

This should hopefully help...

Outlines the basics that are covered and any additional items.

Best of luck!

Hi Julie also consider what hospital you want , iv heard some can be pushy , I.e your the cash cow and they will milk you. If you want a natural birth make it clear from day one. I live right by the Sanitorium and whilst I thought it was fantastically new and clean I just didn't get a great feel from there, felt it very clinical an not personal and after having a meeting with annerley my instincts were confirmed. I also went to see the Adventist and whilst this was an old build I got a great feeling there and felt it very personal , having loads of information offered to me. In the end however I chose Matilda as I want a water birth and this is the closest I can get to one as there you can labour in their baths in their delivery rooms.

I had some friend who went public to queen Mary and whilst they said not many of the staff spoke much English and it could be quite bumpy in respect that you might not get the hotel feel iv heard you get at Matilda the care was fantastic for their twins who were born premature.

Another thing to consider is transport, if your stuck and cannot get a cab the local government will send you an ambulance but then send you to a government hospital.

After visiting the Matilda and speaking to a nurse and head midwife who had been there for years I feel comfortable that my journey will be comfortable and pleasant and speaking to severeL people ahead of me informed that it was absolutely fantastic care.

I'm sure in the end it all down to personal preference , congratulations as try not to worry too much. I have only been here for just over one year myself and I'm still finding obstacles to overcome. Geobaby is great and people are very responsive and willing to help with any questions you have. I would suggest making a group for whenever your due date is and try and meet some mums in the same category. That's what I did and has helped loads. Little steps is another good website .

Good luck
Candice

Also Adventist seems to break down most of the car charging for pain relief to wipes to pads. Where as Matilda offers all over packages with most things included :)

Candice - we hear what you said about Matilda and QMH a lot of times, but we do have to keep in mind that the cost of delivery at the QMH (or within the public system) is < $100 v/s closer to 500x more in the private systems like Matilda.

QHM does respect birthing plans etc, you just have to be firm with them and seek an understanding doctor.

Here's a good reference point: Natural birthing in Hong Kong - Hong Kong Baby & Pregnancy - GeoBaby.Com

Yes I understand if you don't have any medical insurance it's so costly which I didn't mention the money side of it. And that's great on the birthing plan side. Iv heard through word of mouth that some don't. Again the whole experience is individual and everyone's perception is unique. I hope everyone gets a happy one :)

Thank you for the link :)
