Newborn fees for birthing??

Thanks for the info catan. Even with the hospital's and doctor's schedule of charges, it's amazing how difficult it is to come up with an accurate estimate of the final bill.
 
I know!

From the moment of check-in until check-out, they will ask/give you all sorts of things and you don't know what is being charged for or not. I am not sure if the newborn fees change according to your room type like obgyn fees are... but I'll add that I was in a private room.

I think newborn fees do vary according to the class of room you select at the hospital. At the very least, the paediatrician's fees do vary according to the room class.
 
Thanks again for all the detailed replies! Everyone was very helpful and I have a much better idea of the possible costs now.
 
Insurance or no insurance, dont forget to negotiate.

You wont get very far with the hospital (usually overbooked), but you do have very good chance with the OBGYN, Pediatrician and Anesthetist.

We did with 2 out of 3 kids and received between 20-40% off quoted fees. We didnt know better on our first child but did so with the next 2.
 
Just wanted to share my bill info now that our little one was born!

All up the baby's dr. fees were 15,000 for Matilda private room delivery. Pediatrician fees alone were 12,500 for Dr. Carmen Tam (on call pediatrician) which was 5,700 for birth and 6,800 for daily (5-10 mins) visit for 5 days. Rest was lab fees, optional hearing test (800), glucose test, and misc meds/vaccinations like oral Vitamin K, BCG, and Hep B.

We were told the hearing test can only be done at Matilda due to the equipment needed. As someone else mentioned, it only takes 10min, is painless and done while the baby is sleeping.
 
I delivered a year ago at Queen Elizabeth and my waits for a doctor's appointment were no more than 30 mins. After 20 weeks, I was seen by the midwife and the waits were about 50-10 mins. When I checked in to deliver, I waited about 10 mins to get checked into a bed until I was ready to deliver. It's the most comfortable as you share rooms, etc. However, for complicated problems, only public hospitals have all the equipment so your baby will be rushed over to a public hospital anyway. Plus the total fee (after 2 extra days due to jaundice) was HK$650. This includes all the tests, etc. Vaccinations are free at the public clinic if you don't mind. I'm from the US and I went back and forth for a LONG time between spending the money on a private hospital since I gave birth to my first in a fancy VERY private US hospital. In the end of the day, I am more than glad I saved the money and went to QE. The midwife that followed my case told me that she was leaving before my due date. But she promised to visit after she heard I delivered. Not only did she visit, but so do did the ultrasound specialist who saw me and they both called me about 4-6 weeks afterwards at home to see if I was okay and how the baby was! I also took advantage of the breastfeeding clinic (fed for 1 year) and the service was AWESOME! Christine Lam is the lactation specialist there and she is amazing! I had a breast infection which required surgery but they all helped through it for virtually nothing - even telling me to come in on a Saturday, etc.
 
thanks for this! just to clarify - does $15000 mean the delivery fee for the doctor, or is that separate please? I am looking at other posts for natural delivery fees and I see as much as $40000. thank you!
 
Yep, I'm wondering about 15,000 doctor fee too... I need to clarify this with my doctor but he charges much more (and apparently double during CNY) and he's at Baptist not Matilda! My understand is that Matilda docs charge much more.
 
To clarify, the fees mentioned in this thread and in my post are just for the baby, not for the mother's birthing fees which are much more at Matilda. So the Dr. fees I mentioned above for 12,500 are for the pediatrician only, not for the OB/GYN.

FYI- I started out with a natural birth plan, but due to complications ended up with an emergency c-section with epidural in a private room in Matilda and my fees were over 200,000hkd. I'll make a separate post sometime with the fee breakdown if someone is interested.
 
Wow, 12,000 for the ped...good to know! Thanks for clarifying HKexpat...I was nonplussed at my ob/gyn's fee for a while there.
 
Thought I'd share as well. Gave birth in November at Sanatorium and my ped fees were $4,800 for him to standby (since I had a c-section) and $1,800 per day for doc visits (based on private room rates). Total was $12,000 as well. BCG & Hep B as well as blood tests were all included in Sanatorium's package so no additional costs for baby.

FYI Anesthesiologist fee was $16,000 for c-section.
 
hazel... would be helpful if you noted what type of c-section... ie (epidural/spinal/general anesthesia).... as i'm sure fees would vary greatly depending on what type of anesthesia was used.
 
she didn't have her baby at matilda.... (i'm actually not in the "market" to have a baby... i've had my allotted 2 already. i just thought it would be helpful to others so they can compare like with like.)
 
The fee is just for the anesthesiologist. Not any anesthesia. The anesthesia (spinal in my case) is provided under Sanatorium's package.
