New Zealand vacation suggestions

Looking to head to NZ next January/February with 5 months pregnant and with a 21 MO. Any suggestions? From skimming the guidebooks--hiking volcanoes, backpacking forests, hot water spring bathing, ocean kayaking, etc... would seem to be right out.
Thinking of just driving between the cities and enjoying the scenery and cities, unless someone has some "can't miss" recommendations. Would like to head to east point, if it is either easy to get in/out (in terms of hours on the road) or if there is enough to do in the area. We'll be renting a car so we'll have the obility.
Might limit this to just north or south island, as we'll only have a week (American vacations).

Can recommend a week in the South Island for sure. Don't miss Queenstown and surrounds, there is plenty to do with a toddler, it is very very baby friendly down there. Lots of kayaking and walking to be done. Kaikora good for whale watching, this is in the north east. Enjoy, it is the best place I have ever visited!

queenstown is definitely stunning in south island, so is milford sound,& lake wanaka .
v quite liked the drives in north island with places & visited places like coramandel, arorua, to rotorua (which is hot springs etc), drive around canterbury plains was breathtaking.

Hadn't tried the web yet. Had been flipping a few guide books which seemed to be centered on the outdoor-adventure theme.
