I just had my baby girl four weeks ago and am struggling big time with her sleeping pattern. She is agitated with me for some reason when I feed her during wee hours and often wakes up shortly after we put her to sleep resulting in very little or no sleep for me. Any suggestions?

Hi soulmama

I've been reading "Nappy Free Baby" by Amber Hatch which suggest it might be a case that your baby needs a wee. The book is about baby led potty training which you can do from birth but you could try squatting her over a "potty"/tub/toilet and see if she just needs to relieve herself....

Some info on baby led potty training/elimination communication can be found on www.nappyfreebaby.co.uk. I think there's a video which is good for showing how to hold the baby in position and you can find more videos on youtube.

Anyway just a suggestion as I am still waiting for the birth of my first! Someone else might have more experience and suggestions for you!

Hi soulmama,
My girl gets fussy during feed when she has wind,so I just burp her. Or sometimes she needs to wee. Dunno if that's the case for you. Otherwise maybe she's on growth spurt. They get fussy and need contents feeding.

Are you holding her for 20-30 mins after she goes to sleep before putting her down? Babies go through cycles of light and deep sleep. If you put her down too soon she's in her light sleep cycle and is likely to wake. It could also be wind or upset tummy as around 4 weeks they start to eat more but their gut has yet to mature resulting in wind/gas pains. Try raising the mattress at one end so it's at an slight incline. I also found baby probiotic drops helped, your paediatrician can prescribe or you can buy over the counter at Watson's RX or Fanda.

Are you breastfeeding? If so try the laid-back breastfeeding position (in bed) that way you can doze while she feeds which helps immensely with the sleep deprivation.

From about 4 weeks, babies often develop colic which peaks around 6/7 weeks and then starts to subside.

soulmama, little babies need comforting, soothing, warmth and feeding too often. She is not agitated with you - this is very normal. She's only a month old. Sleepless nights with the baby are famous for a reason. Things will get better with time. My five month old still wakes up often and I know this too shall pass away so I really do not mind. All he wants is a little love and I am in no hurry to have him become an independent sleeper. Forget about peaceful uninterrupted sleep for a bit else this journey will feel very long.

As far as a patter is concerned, just when you think your baby has a pattern , it may vanish the very next day. Be patient, take it as it comes and remember most new babies are like this.

For sleeping, try swaddling it helps. As for being agitated, try to calm her down first before feeding, it helps to reduce too much wind going in due to crying. Also do some tummy/leg massage for the baby to help ease the wind in her tummy.

Only an expert pediatric can suggest the right thing and we parents are only make guess through our experience. No doubt a baby needs sufficient sleep for proper growth; therefore we parents are struggling to make our baby sleep through various process.
