Need best O & G for high risk pregnancy

We just relocated from Tokyo a few months ago and now I have a 'miracle' pregnancy. We were diagnosed with secondary infertility and both my children, aged 3 and thirteen months were concieved with fertility treatments.

Very high risk pregnancies and delivery for both, bedrest, hospitalization, retained placenta, pre-eclampsia, premature birth, 2 C-sections (1 hysterotomy), 1 natural birth - my son was born naturally after 13 hours (Emergency C-section for the retained placenta).

We need the best O & G, someone who is very experienced, will be calm and give us the time. Thank you

I would guess the IVF Drs would have the most experience with high-risk pregnancies. Dr Derek Lo has a great reputation and I know a lot of people who adore him. Other Drs frequently recommended by our members are Philip Ho and Alex Doo.

I would highly reccommend Dr milton Leung and Dr Alex Doo. The practice is called the Womans Clinic. Both v v v good docs!!!! If u need anymore dets let me know.

Thanks for the recommendations. Who would be the top choice, Dr Doo or Dr Leung?

I just tested positive with the home pregnancy tests so I will get the pregnancy confirmed with the Docs when I can get an appointment.

Since we just moved here, with such a long list of things to do like finding a schools, maid etc.. the next thing on the list was a comprehensive health insurance so believe it or not we have a high risk pregnancy with no insurance. If anyone has any advice, we can surely do with some help.

In the meantime, I've to wean my daughter off completely, she's still breastfed! I also need to find another maid as Docs will want me to keep off my feet as much as I can.
 
I had both Dr. Leong and Dr. Doo (while Dr. Leong was away from HK) for my IVF baby. Both doctors are excellent. While Dr. Leong is the elderly doctor with more experience, Dr. Doo is a younger one. You may choose either depends on your own personal preference. I had complications during the first and third trimesters which they both handled expertly.

Other favourite OB is Dr Stevenson (also IVF specialist) and Dr Sally Ferguson.

I suggest that you visit a few and see what you personally think. As for everyone that loves one another dislikes them a lot! Personal Choice.

However, high risk are not necessarily better off with an IVF doctor as not all IVF patients have high risks patients. If an IVF dr does not deliver and do general OBS then they are referred on at about 6 weeks or after the first scan.

However, overall, if high risk, there is no doubt in my mind that one visits the two top specialists at the QUeen Mary High Rosk Clinic. One can go there as a private patient or a regular one.

You can either ask a private dr to refer you to the clinic (Dr CP Lee and/or Prof Lao/Lau - both excellent! And highly recommendable.

If you know you are or develop into a high risk pg I would not recommend the Matilda as should something happen it is far away (in terms or organising hosptial ambulance/transport and distance) to be transferrred (you or babe) to the Queen Mary (were you would be sent) and losing precious time.

I know this from a few high risk (bedrest) patients, being a nurse and know that for any high risk I would start of my pg with a private dr and then have a consult at the Queen Mary and take it from there.

I know that one dr sends all high risk patients (twins) to have a consult at the Queen Mary so that they already know the hospital and drs already just incase something happens or waters break early etc. When this does happen, before a certain cut off date a private hospital would not take you anyway even if you are booked in.

I would visit the whole lot and see what they offer in all scenarios.

Hi Wand, CONGRATULATIONS....You seems to have gone through a lot in your earlier pregnancies. Take care of yourself.

Well, Im expecting my second IVF baby too. My first delivery was via C-Sec and Im expecting the second to be a C-Sec too. No major complications, but my road to this point has been very very hard and difficult..

Anyway Im looking for a High Risk OB/GYN too. Do any or all of these doctors have their own ultrasound machines in their own offices. I hate the ones that send you elsewhere for an Ultrasound?

A question for the other posters....Are these doctors some of you recommended IVF doctors or OBGYNS or both? IVF specialists are usually Reproductive Endocrinologists and not OB/GYNs. There are some ofcourse who double up as both because IVF is very lucrative a practice....

First of all congratulations to all of you. I had Philip Ho (with Nicholson and Associates). I had to have a C-Section, which was fortunate as it turned out I had a few extra problems. He was very calm and competent through all this and in fact I didn't know about the further complications until after the baby was born and I was in the hospital room. He's got his own ultrasound machine and a few friends were referred to him for this as their own doctors didn't have the equipment. I would definitely use him again. He was very thorough during all the follow ups as well.

First up, I'll be seeing Dr Phillip Ho this Friday and will let you know how it'd gone.

I've also made an appt to see Dr Doo in a couple of weeks time. I have a weakness for ultrasounds as I get to see baby so I'm really excited about these visits.

As I mentioned earlier, since this is a surprise pregnancy, we don't have maternity cover so these 'shop around' visits will be kept to a minimum. I will explore the Queen Mary option with the Drs as prematurity is quite likely in my case.

Am trying to get a pic. of the 'fruits' of my two hard won pregnancies up so bear with me if it all goes awry. How do you get a picture up next to my name?

All the Drs have an u/s machine, however only a couple have the latest high-tech models.

I think the HK Drs are both OBGYNs and IVF specialists. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Honestly for a high-risk pregnancy the public system offers the best care. They have the lastest equipment and the most experienced Drs on call.

Hi All

Please note that that IVF specialists are not necessarily OB/GYN and vice versa.

For example Dr Ghosh is an OB/GYN but not IVF, same for Dr Sally Ferguson. Dr Stevenson (IVF) only recently started doing OB work as well.

These are two different fields as such that overlap.

Usually after an IVF cycle you are released to a regualr OB/GYN at around 6 weeks.

Queen Mary specialists are Prof Terence Lao and Dr CP Lee of the High Risk Clinic.

Please note that all births under 34 weeks are dealt with the government system. No private hospital or doctor can deliver you. You would call your dr who would then tell you to go to the QMH. That is why many private drs will send you there to visit the unit etc so that you know the lay out should something happen before 34 weeks.

I know that Dr Doo does refer his high risk patients to the QMH as does Dr Ferguson. They are the experts even for putting in a stitch for incompetent cervix.

Put it this way, things I have seen and heard of recently I would not even put a stitch in, in a private clinic. The QMH has the best experience and has seen it all compared to a private dr who may only see one odd case every now and again.

I want to thank everybody for all the helpful advice and suggestions. Unfortunately, this pregnancy was not meant to be.

I consulted Dr Phillip Ho, he was very understanding and caring, he did spend some time with us to go through our case.

I did have to go to Matilda Hospital, I agree that you'd be quite nervous heading out all that way when you are in labour esp if high risk.

I did not see Dr Doo or anyone else. I hope everyone else have better luck with their pregnancies. Thank you once again.
