Moving to USA

hi

I will move to USA by the end of October! Can any one suggest a
moving company? Should we buy the furniture in USA or
in HK?

try Crown relocation.

Which state are u moving to? If you move to CA or states where there are many chinese, it maybe cheaper just to buy the furnitures in the US since you can find good deal at the local Vietnamese furniture stores.

Agree with above comments on depends who is paying for the shipping and which state you are moving into. If you already have customized furniture here, you will find it virtually impossible for it to be duplicated in the US at a reasonable price as labor is quite expensive there.

Another thing to consider is weather, since it is humid in HK, if for example you move to CA where it is dry, Rosewood furniture has a good possibility of cracking, so shipping said furniture would be a waste.

Yes, if you have to have a specific type of furniture in the US, and it isn't a mass production item, it will be expensive.

Thanks to all of you. I will move to Sunnyvale in California at the beginning of November and all the shipping cost is paid myself.

After reading your comments, i decide to buy the furniture in USA.
By the way, can anyone of you advice where to buy second hand furniture in CA?

Many Thanks!!

For 2nd hand furnitures you might have better luck at consignment shops or some non for profit thrift stores. You might also be able to pick up some stuff from garage/estate sales & ads in pennysaver magazines. Keep in mind that you might not get very high caliber stuff unless you're really lucky.

There is also an Ikea in Palo Alto right off the 101 freeway (University exit) if you like the Ikea style.

Also for kids/baby items, there is a Yahoo group for South Bay Parents that is set up to enable parents in the Silicon Valley area to buy, sell, trade or give away baby, child and maternity equipment, toys, clothes, and related items.. It's pretty safe, I've had no issues dealing with buying or selling off the site and it's geared for the San Jose area and vicinity. Here is the website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SBParentsbuy_sell_kidstuff/

There are also other sites such as CraigsList( http://sfbay.craigslist.org/ )and www.freecycle.org where you can search for items that people are selling/giving away all over the bay area (and beyond). You might need to look through the items carefully, but I've had friends post/buy some beautiful furniture on Craigslist for cheap.

Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions on the Bay Area, it's my stomping grounds!

Hoimei,
You can avoid the expensive shipping and follow jubee's advice, unless you have items you can't do without. Garage sales are held weekly, almost, in Sunnyvale and nearby cities--just follow the signs posted on the neighborhood streets! (Although, I can't comment on quality or lack of.)

If you find yourself needing an asian environment, with shops and such, visit Cupertino Square in Cupertino (bordering city) or Milpitas Square (Walmart is nearby). Both places have a 99Ranch--the largest asian supermarket: www.99ranch.com .

Enjoy the California weather!

used to be in Cali and sold my furniture on http://sfbay.craigslist.org/ a very popular communicty website for the Bay Area. my furniture and car basically all sold within a week, no problems at all. maybe you want to check it out, as list is very active.

yeah, feel free to pm me as well. love that place! Enjoy!

we just moved back the the US last year. I really recommend you to buy furniture there instead of shipping it, unless you really love your own furniture, since the shipping is really high, plus the furniture there is not too expensive.....

echo all suggestions above. in addition, try furniture stores on El Camino Street in Sunnyvale/mountain view.
