Hi,

I am moving to HK and will be 30 weeks pregnant. Have decided to have baby at the Matilda despite health insurance only covering 15K.

I am now freaking out about after birth care for myself and baby. Do I need to pay for the baby to have all its vaccinations via the Matilda hospital? or Can this done by a local GP? If so what are the pros and cons for this? What does it cost to visit a GP? Oh we will be living in Stanley is there a GP you could recommend there?

Thanks

Lisa

Lisa Welcome to Hong Kong!

Don't worry, the healthcare here is excellent. And we're happy to help answer any questions. You don't have to have yr vaccinations at the Matilda, a Paed or a Family practioner will also do them.

If you're in Stanley, here are a couple of family practices in Repulse Bay:

Dr Owen Trodd and Partners

A GP consultation can range from $500-800 plus you have to pay for the shot.

Another option is getting your shots done through the Gov't system. Its free. There is a Gov't clinic in Stanley

After you've given birth, you'll receive a letter from the Gov't informing you of the nearest clinic and details on how to make an appt.

Rani,

OMG! "A GP consultation can range from $500-800"

I've never gone to a GP in HK who charged more than $300 per visit. Average price for my consultations and 3 days woth of medicine is $220.

I have 2 GPs who I visit (one closer to work, one closer to home). One is an HKU graduate who got later training in England and Ireland. The other is a graduate from Oz.

Are those HK island prices or what?

Loupou,

Yes, they're Central prices. I've only paid $300 at Canossa's outpatient clinic, and that's during regular hours. If you go at night/weekends its double.

I guess the doctors have to charge those prices for those rents in Central, eh.

I'm such a penny-pincher.

My doctor charges $220 (consultation fee) + medicine fee. For just the vaccination, he doesn't charge for consultation fee. He is GP with diploma in child health, graduated from Australia. His clinic is in Central as well. But, for the non-office hour, I can call him thru Canossa Out-patient, and he charges $500 consultation fee, and need to pay the room charge and medicine fee for Canossa, total will be around $800-$1000.

Lisa, just also keep in mind that at Matilda after birth you will also have to pay for a private pediatrician to visit bubs every day, as well as your ob to check on you - just to factor these costs....
