I'm just wondering, can't you teach your child? I'm a teacher and it's actually pretty simple to do mind mapping. The main idea is in the centre and then the mind map just grows out. We use this method to teach the kids all the time. You could use that to teach classifications. For example food as a topic. Food is in the middle and then from there you could branch out into different cuisines and then from different cuisines into the specifics. Hope I sort of answered your question.
