This is very scary and very sad. I hope people are made to pay for this. Imagine what it would be like to be a mother in China trying to feed your baby. Horrible. Apparently 13,000 babies are currently in hospital suffering kidney failure etc.

It's awful and I too feel for the Mothers who trusted the companies and fed their babies the powder! What's scary is that it was NOT an accident but was done on purpose to cut costs and to make the milk seem of a higher quality than it was.

Only fresh Australian milk for us from now on. But makes me wonder about the people who can't afford the Australian milk and have to buy milk from China.

Random question, but what about the fresh milk available in Hong Kong, e.g. Kowloon Dairy. Where does the "raw" milk come from and is it collected on the Mainland?

I have exactly the same question, as most of the writing on the containers is in Chinese so I can't read where the milk comes from. On the price label in the supermarket it says "Hong Kong", but surely there are not enough dairy farms (if any??) in HK to supply enough milk for Kowloon Dairy, Trappist, etc? So where is the actual source of the milk?

Definitely Pura Australian milk for us from now on, even though it is more expensive.

thanx for posting the links rani! i tried to find the info this morning, but couldn't find it. though the news hasn't said anything about kowloon dairy or vita, i would be wary. definitely australian or american milk for us.

...and melamine is a carcinogen in rats (causes higher incidence of bladder and urinary tract cancer). Maybe I'm being squeamish, but hmmm....

The fresh milk I was buying for my son (the Nestle in the clear carton with the red plastic top) says it is from Yuen Long on the side of the carton and so I assumed it was from HK.

However info. of the governments website says that it is actually from China!!! According to government tests it does not contain melamine BUT other Nestle milk has been recalled because it does contain the chemical, including the Nestle Fresh Milk for catering.
So I'm a little concerned about Nestle milk in general.

The govt. website also says Trappist Milk comes from China, even though it also has Yuen Long, HK on its container.
A friend whose wife works for the govt. centre for food safety says Trappist milk is being re-tested!

According to the Chinese press the govt. is going to release today govt. clinics that will test HK children for kidney stones/problems.

Does anyone know about Nestle Nespray Milk Powder? No mention on that on the websites.... Gosh, we need to go one step further - organic milk!

how do we know if our child is affected? my toddler drank both nestle's dairy farm and paul's milk depending whatever is available or on sale. i'm concerned bc i don't know if she drank any of the contaminated batches. but taking her to the hospital would definitely be an all day if not 2-3 day wait.

also does anyone know if this stuff leaks into breastmilk? i'm still nursing my younger baby, but i have had contaminated milk myself.

Oh, this is so sad and so infuriating! My thoughts are: When is the mainland going to get it that they need to have some sort of standards and really enforce them. Not even 2 years ago overseas pets were dying from the same kidney-related problems because they ate pet food tainted with melamine and the tainted powder was traced back to the mainland. How many children have to get sick or die and how many families have to grieve before they get their act together! My deepest sympathies also to those in HK who have been affected by this.

Hi,

I'm not expert on this, but you can call LLL to ask.

In my opinion, breastmilk is the best, even if you have drank contaminated milk yourself. If you are sick or down with flu, baby still won't be contaminated with the breastmilk. If you are taking medicines, baby is still safe, i don't know how it works.

Continue to breastfeed. I'll have my baby soon and i swear it's exclusive breastfeeding with the scare going on.

Does anybody know exactly what brand did contain the tainted milk? I didn't see any listed on the brands that did contain the toxin.

on the list, Wyeth brand not contaminated only included level 1 and 2. My toddler is on level 3 (age 3 onwards), is it safe or shall i switch to something else for now?
