Maternity Charges at Queen Mary Hospital

hi is it safe to always have a ultrasound everytime a pregnant mother has a prenatal check up?
i am seeing dr.stephanie chow in central and its like 2,500hkd everytime i see her as she gives me an ultra sound everytime costs is 800 plus consultation plus plus so every 3 weeks it cashes up to 2500hkd. Is it possible to still change doctors as iam due in sept 16/this year?

you can change drs anytime you like.
i think private drs do so many ultrasounds because it's more $$$ for them! they assume that everyone has insurance to cover the cost.

i had a lot of ultrasounds during my 2 pregnancies at QMH, but i had 2 very complicated pregnancies. it isn't normal in the public system. the norm for the public system is 2 ultrasounds for the whole pregnancy.

i don't think that u/s harm the baby at all though... i think i had at least 8 ultrasounds during each of my pregnacies and both of my kids are happy and healthy.

Tours are held every Saturday at 12 noon (except public holidays and typhoon no. 8 or above). The gathering place is at K Block 6/F, i.e. the lobby outside K6S ward of our Hospital.

Make sure to call before you arrive for the tour! My wife and I just showed up, assuming that the tour was in the English language...no, only Cantonese.

Apparently the English language tours are held during the week.

I hope that this helps.

There is an English tour on Saturdays, but I think it's like every 4th Saturday or something like that. I had the dates for the English tours but I chucked them out, sorry! It was in the pack that they give you when you register...

anyone know if I can choose my own doctor from the hospital if I go for private patient ?

any recommended doctor in the hospital ?

yes - you can choose your doctor, but if you go private you will first need a referral letter from an outside OBGYN. i am with Dr C.P. Lee and she is very thorough...though also very busy

Hi Miggy
I am thinking of getting my maternity planned at queens mary hospital. I saw some positive reviews that you have posted for the hospital. That is very encouraging for me.It seems impossible that they charge only 350 hkd for the entire process. Was that a typo at your end? Also there are two types general and private.do they give all these facilities in private?or general.
Thanks

$350 is for public care. and it is correct. it includes everything IF you have valid HKID. it costs $100/day. private care at QMH is not much cheaper than private anywhere else.

$350 is based on a 3 night stay in hospital - if you need to stay for longer it would cost more, but that covers all treatment, medicine, surgery, everything.

can non-residents register anymore? i thought from 1st jan this year hospitals aren't allowed to take ANY non residents (apart from via a&e).

People keep saying this but my research says otherwise. Someone I contacted who went this route told me three days in a PRIVATE room at QMH for a vaginal delivery cost 40,000$. Even if it's gone up since then, it wouldn't be more than 60,000$.

I was quoted $60-80,000 for a vaginal delivery in a WARD in Baptist Hospital, which is already cheaper than other private hospitals on Hong Kong Island. So one would be paying the same or less in QMH-private for a PRIVATE room. A PRIVATE room in Baptist could go up to 100,000 or more. I would definitely say private in QMH is substantially cheaper.

Another thing that seems to scare people about private in QMH is that the antenatal charges are also "private". But the charges are around 550hkd, which is again cheaper than private antenatal care at HK$700-1000.

For some people, private at a public hospital might indeed be a good option. If anyone is considering it, speak to people who have actually gone through that system or who have found out in detail what it costs.

$39,000-90,000 is QMHs charges for private ward, which puts it on par with other private hospitals.

the charges i quoted are from QMHs own circular about charges.... please see above.

no, there is no difference for "eligible" and "non-eligible" when it comes to the private care in a gov't hospital. hence, the $39000-90000. the $90,000 is the top end for non-booked people, at least that is my understanding. i provided the links in my posts.

a private delivery in QMH will not go below $39000 (you yourself said ~$40k) and will go up from there.

1) I'm not certain "there is no difference for "eligible" and "non-eligible" when it comes to the private care in a gov't hospital". The circular should have said so. Even in a private hospital, I am asked specifically to bring my ID which makes me think that there is a difference in rates for eligible HK residents and others. This may well be the case in public too.
2) The range is crucial. 90,000$ is more than double 39,000 and I don't believe that would be the range for a vaginal delivery for an eligible person going private. For someone considering private, the difference between 40,000-60,000 (which I believe the range would be) and 60-000-80,000 which was the range quoted to me by Baptist is a fair bit.

We paid around $39,778 for a vaginal delivery in Sanatorium, 6 person ward. This included some fee's like the paediatrician not strictly related to the birth. This was a couple of years ago but I doubt prices have more than doubled since then.

EDIT: Fee split was $17,200 for the maternity package, $20,000 for the doctor and the rest to paediatrician and some medicine.

$60,000 is not a doubling of 40,000 but I'm still surprised. Does this mean Baptist is more expensive than Sanatorium? Who would've thunk? Or maybe coming into CNY 2012 made all the difference?

How many weeks would you be then? They tend to schedule the first appointment between 12-14 weeks. I'm assuming you are in the public track. The appointments thereafter will be more regular but not as frequent as if you were going private, unless they feel you need more frequent monitoring. They also offer only one free scan during the whole process unless they feel you need more.
Some women, particularly first-time mums, supplement the public antenatal appointments with private ones. I did, and spent about 12,000hkd on that. My policy was to use whatever free services I can (like whatever tests they provided free) and go in between to a private doc to get extra scans and have someone to call in case I needed advice in between.
