I am currently in Taipei but will be moving to HK June/2005. My 21mo is currently in a wonderful Mandarin-only Montessori here half-days 5days/week. I am looking for a similar school in HK. Any recommendations? We have no idea where we will live yet, so are not limited by that.

TIA!

Hi,

There is no Mandarin montessori school in HK. However, my daughter goes to International Montessori School and it's bilingual Montessori program: English and Mandarin. There are 2 teachers in the class: 1 native English speaker and 1 native Mandarin speaker. I am extremely happy with the school. You can check out http://www.montessori.com.hk/

If you apply now, you'd probably won't get the morning class in September. You might get the afternoon class.

Let me know if you need more info.

Would appreciate if anyone know of a Mandarin Montessori playgroup on HK Island. A friend of mine has a 2 year old and she's not ready to send her child to a Montessori preschool yet. She works so a couple of hours on Sat and/or Sunday would be OK. Thanks a lot !

I just came across Little Dynamites's ad on another site and they do Montessori playgroup for upto 3yrs old either in English or Mandarin.

I just found out Woodland Montessori on Caine Road has a Saturday Mandarin class. Has anyone tried this before ? Thank you for your input.

I am a both a parent and a Montessori teacher doing my practical, and there are several Montessori learning centers that I know in Hong Kong.

CHILDREN'S OWN WORKSHOP (Causeway Bay - Hysan Road Above starbuck). But only English Montessori for the moment. They do have daily classes. Don't think they have a website.

INFINITY CHILDREN'S WORLD - (Prince Edward and Tsuen Wan). Founders are AMS certified. Mon-Sat daily classes. They also have weekly seminar on Montessori and Jelic. The center will soon offer Madarin Montessori classes.

BEST CONCEPT (Tsim Sha Tsui) - Run by Taiwanese Teachers. Mon-Fri daily classes. It's Bilingual - Mandarin and English. Think they are AMS certified. Parent feedbacks says that it's more like 70-80% English and 20-30% Mandarin. Again, it might not be the same for every class.

You might want to check them out for yourself. Good luck!

Dear all,

I have heard Montessori in different occasions. Could you please share with me your experiences? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks!

Alice

Hi Yanmama,

Thanks for informing me. A friend of mine is interested and I believe she has contacted Antione already.

Cheers.

Dear Alice,

It's almost impossible for me to sum it up in a few words, but I will give it a try with some help of the information on the internet.

The Montessori method is both a methodology and educational philosophy. It was originally developed in the early 1900s by Dr. Maria Montessori as a way to educate poor children in her native Italy.

Montessori approach is quite different from traditional appraoches. For example, lot of parents prepare tons of things to teach their children (which in turns imposed them on the kids, even it's out of the best intention). But rather than choosing for the babies, why don't parents encourage and motivate the children to learn on thier own. Children are curious by birth. It's most effectiv ethis way too. They are interested and eager to learn tons of things to survive. They will enjoy best what intetest them most. Our goal is: Help them to be on their own.

Also, Dr. Montessori believes that personalites is molded ataround the age of 3. If we give a child lots of confidence and a safe environemnt that encourages him to learn and explore, he will grow up to be confident and in love of learning. Isn't it ture that our past experiences make us who we are today?

Dr. Montessori also believes that human beings have "window period". So for example, child bearing ability or lactating ability only occur at certain period in life. After that we lose those abilities. During the window period, children are most receptive to that stimulant. For example, window period for language skill is at around age 3. After the age of 5, whatever langauges that the child learns will onger "mother tongue", and learning languages won't be as effortless as before. They will have accents.

They should be able to make their own decision within a have "window periods". There are stages when thier minds are most receptive to certains things. Once they passed that stage, they lose the ability of learning that skills.

These are only a glimsp of her works. For more info, I highly recommend that you check out some books to read about her.

As for Pros and Cons, not everybody accept the Montessori way. Dr. Montessori have mix age classroom. Children have lots of educational material to work with. They could select what they like to do first or last. They are given freedom to choose within certain big guidelines. But what comes with this Freedom and Choices are - responsiblities. So as we let them make their own decision, along we must teach them their responsibilties. So at early age, you could already see children in a Montessori classroom help setting the table, mopping the floor. They help out and they tidy up after themselves. Making responsible decision for themselves, classroom is extremely orderly most of the time.

Some people say that it will be hard for Montessori chidlren to fit in regualr classes. One main reason is : They sometimes get bored waiting for the teachers to assigne them things to do.

Depends how you see things, at some ocaasion, a parent might find a child with "no discipline", while another parent might think the child is perfectly reasonable with disciplined.

The thing that I like about Montessori teaching is because it is a more holistic approach to teaching. She does not focus on say flash card alone, or phonics alone. She pays attention to a balanced overall developement of a child. she cares about the personalities and who the child will become tomorrow.

Since I have used the Montessori method on my son, he has major improvement. He used to rely on the nanny to do quite a lot of things, and now he starts acting more responsibly. At the age of 5 1/2, he is fluent in Madarin, English and Cantonese. He has mastered at least 6 digits of mutiplication, subtrations carrying the digits over. And I never dream of he could master and actually undesrtand the definition of terms like" percipitation, condensation, percolation". I didn't have to force him, I only let him play some matching games. Whatever you do with them, have with lots and lots of patience. You know that once you get them going, you can't even stop them.

Of course, my sons still has tons of areas that he needs to work on, but unlike before where I don't even know where to start and how to start, I now learned to pay more attention to observe him and leanred how I could motivate and encourage him to move ahead.

It is full

Hi Runforfun,

I called this school today but it was full. Could you please give me the adress of this schoo 'cause I cannot understand cantonese so well.

Hi airay,

I could show you where it is on the map. It might be the easiest if you have a map with you.

(1) Go to Yellow Page Map:
http://www.ypmap.com/en/viewer.asp?mapService=LocationMap

(2) On left column, click on "building" as search category
(3) Under building name type "Cheong Sin House"
(4) Under region, select "kowloon"

The kindy locates on the Ground Floor of "Cheong Sin House". Please don't let my over-detailed instruction below intimidate you. I only wanted to include it in case there is no English speaking people around that day. All you need to do is walk through mall. It's quite easy.

If you take the MTR, exit "Lung Cheung Mall". ( I believe the exit is B3, somehow it's not showing on the yp map.) Exit B3 should bring you to the Ground floor of Lung Cheung Mall. Enter the mall on your left, take the escalator and go up 2 flights to reach its top floor. Now you are at the same level where the Wong Tai Sin (upper) Estate is. Walk all the way down until you pass a "Yoshinoya" (Beef Bowl Restaurant) on your right. Go through the glass door towards the end on your right to reach Wong Tai Sin Estate. Go straight ahead and you will reach the children's playground. "Cheong Sin House" should be the second building on your left. You will see the signs of the kindy by then.

Gracefield has only 1 toddler class right now, so it fills up fast. They will increase the number of classes if there is demand. The principal said they'd rather expand at a slower rate than to compromise quality. The teacher:student ratio is 1:7. ( 14 students per class with 2 teachers) They welcome school visits all year round, but advance appointment is required.

Thanks a lot

Runforfun,

Thanks a lot for your so so so detailed reply. I don't need yp map. I will print out your reply and bring it along with me on the day to visit the kindergarten.

Several of my friends are also intrested in this playgroup but the only thing is that it is a little bit far away from our houses in Sai Kung. Do you know any of such playgroup in Sai kung or TKO area. If not, it's ok. We will try to find a way to teach our kid by Montessori method.

Thanks again
