Living will before giving birth

You need a simple letter outlining that you do not want certain types of life prolonging measures.

This letter needs to be witnessed by someone other than your spouse. It is as simple as them signing it. You may also want to allow your spouse or close relative to act as a proxy who can be used to decide what course of action needs to be taken.

Present this letter to your doctor and let them know that these are your instructions. In most cases, they will follow them to the letter or they may let you know that for whatever reason they cannot comply. I am not sure if there is a formal procedure here in Hong Kong - have not seen it in play at Queen Mary - the doctors took the living will document, examined it and added to the file.

Here's an interesting paper on what the govt calls "Advance Directives" - seems to be the term used in the UK / Common Wealth.

I had recently witnessed a living will which was similar to this in substance: Free Living Will tweak it to what you feel is acceptable and conforms to your wishes.

Best of luck on your delivery - don't stress too much!!
