live out helper questions

Hi Everyone

I am new to hong kong and have a 10 week old baby. We have been thinking about getting a helper but dont have the room in our apartment for someone to live in. I really need someone to help out with the housework and to help me with the baby so I need to find someone who has experience with infants. I understand that foreign nationals need to be live in but have been told that someone with residency in Hong Kong can live out.

I have read through the some of the previous threds but still have a few questions that I was hoping someone could help out with.

1. What are the general hours for a live out helper?

2. What is the expected salary for a live out helper?

3. Are there any extra costs involved above the salary?

4. Where can I find a live out helper who would have experience with a baby?

5. Does a live out helper need to sign a contract?

6. How do I go about organising everything?

Thankyou for your assistance

Kristy,

There are a couple of helper ads on GeoExpat and they are HK residents. Here's one:

http://www.geoexpat.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=8502&sort=1&cat=16&page=2

1. What are the general hours for a live out helper?
Flexible. Its between you and her to agree on.

2. What is the expected salary for a live out helper?
They normally charge per hr. Around $60-80/hr

3. Are there any extra costs involved above the salary?
Only other thing I can think of is insurance.

4. Does a live out helper need to sign a contract?
Best to have a contract. I guess whatever you agree on put it down in paper and have her sign it.

Thanks Rani

I have contacted a couple of people from the classifieds. I guess I was just trying to get a feel for how many hours a full time helper would work. I know that wage range for a live in but would a live out full time be paid hourly or a set wage.

Also how do i know if a helper can legally work as a live out, would they need to have a residents card?

Thanks

Kristy

Hi,

For all new contracts signed with a domestic helper it is illegal for the helper to live out; existing contracts where the domestic helper lives out are legal.

So if you were signing a new contract with a helper it would be illegal for her to live out, unless she has a permanent HKID card.

Kristy,

You will need to check her ID card and passport to see her visa. If she's on a Domestic Helper visa it is illegal to hire her, cos she can only work for her sponser. If she's on a dependent visa, or a permanent ID card holder should be ok.
