Labor Bag Preparation for QMH

Hi- I am 20 days away from my delivery and was wishing to make my labor bag and wanted help regarding a list of things to carry-any must-haves, specially for QMH?
pain killers ( nitrous oxide) to carry or do they provide,
gowns,
special sanitary pads to carry,
glucose or things for new born.
Any personal recommendation for delivery will be appreciated.

pain killers? i have never been to a hospital that didn't have pain killers. ;) i would say that they would be very upset if you took your own medicine as it might react badly with what they give you.

glucose for the new baby??? why in the world would you need that?

don't take your own gown. they will provide you with a beautiful, pink ensemble to wear (how they seem to know who is a patient and who is not).

after being hospitalised 13 times at QMH, i would say that the two most important things are:
1) ear plugs
2) blackout eye patch/cover

other things:
1) clothes for you to wear home
2) clothes for baby to wear home
3) reading material for yourself
4) snacks/drinks for your stay (i took peanut butter and bread in case i got hungry between meals or late at night)
5) ipod or something to watch/listen to (with headphones of course!)

And a towel - I don't think they provide towels for the shower. I agree, no need to bring painkillers or glucose. The hospital will provide all the painkillers you need, and baby doesn't need to drink anything except for breastmilk (which is best for them, or if you choose, formula). Not sure if the hospital provides formula - I think they do... but I breastfed so not 100% sure. BOTH of my kids were fed formula there against my wishes though - but both times was in NICU/SCBU rather than the regular ward...

It is VERY boring being in hospital, so something to entertain yourself is a must!!

QMH does provide formula milk. My milk didn't come for 5 days so I used some formula when baby was still hungry. The food is very local chinese so take some snacks. QMH has a list of things to take - check that. But there is a 7 11 at QMH so you can buy some stuff if you need it.

after being hospitalised 13 times at QMH......5) ipod or something to watch/listen to (with headphones of course!)

How did you deal with the "not allowed to use electrical outlets" rule? Did you just bring extra batteries or ignore the rules and sneak a charger behind the curtains?

Of all the rules, I thought that one was the really odd one considering so many patients would want to charge their phones and other minor electronic items.

i usually closed the curtain. i was there so much and for so long, all of the nurses turned a blind eye to it...

Thanks all.
Glucose was meant for me. thought it might help hydrate me when in pain..
I got a charger which holds the charge and u can charge phone, ipad for 5 hrs without electricity. Howard u can get so if needed.
I will try getting hold of QMH list from them.

ick! can't imagine drinking pure sugar... i get my highs from coke zero and nestea (almost the same as pure sugar, but more like pure chemicals! LOL!)

i delivered at qmh in 2010 and had to bring the following into the delivery room:
- maternity pads
- bed liners
- diapers for baby
Since there are suggested brands (pads & liners) per qmh I would recommend u to just get it from the 7-11 when u arrive, coz we didn't have the right ones and they send my hubby down to get the preferred one anyways. For diapers u bring whichever brand u prefer, the pack will kept under the baby basket & u also bring your own wipes. They will use it for baby after their daily bath and of course u will change your baby the rest of the time since baby is room in with mom @ qmh.

Both baby & I used their gowns when we stayed and only need a set of clothing when we leave. Your family can bring those to u on the last day as storage space is limited.

I also brought my own slippers and a comfy sweater.

From what I know they also provided formula if prefer (they ask me multiple times from the moment I arrive & at the delivery suite my preferred feeding method) but no sure if u can choose the brand of formula. I chose breastfeeding and baby was given to us for bonding right after delivery. the lactation goes around to check plus they have classes daily.

Oh one more thing u can bring your own music to the delivery suite (cd player only) and that was good to have

Rather than a sweater I'd take a cardigan. Then you can have your chest are open to the baby, with blankets over the both of you, but still keep your shoulders warm.

Remember that lots of skin-to-skin with the baby will help the baby with the temperature control, help with the breastfeeding and reduce engorgement.

Best wishes,
SARAH

Yes I mean a cardigan, basically living in button up clothing for the first few months after giving birth then it's all types of breast feeding tops :)

Hi Blessed, congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your little one! Re breastfeeding tops, you may find you don't really need many. They are expensive, hard to find and sometimes not much of a range. I find stretchy tops, button down tops, or two-layers work fine. With the two layers option, you can buy a thin singlet, and wear any top you like over that, then when little one is hungry, you can simply pull one layer up, one layer down, and feed away. Its quite private too. Good luck! :D

Also bring a cup for yourself to drink with. They fill up a jug for you but you need something to drink from.
Socks, slippers
Nipple ointment (Lanolin) if breastfeeding
Nursing pads
Chargers, they don't like you to use them because if there's an emergency, they want to make sure they have enough electricity for the equipment, but everyone used it to charge their phones...

Cash to go down to starbucks(if you can walk)
Voltarene tablets , I was only offered panadol when I went there(twice)

they have stronger pain meds. you need to ask for them, and seriously need them (i was on pain killers throughout both pregnancies for different reasons). any hospital would frown on you taking outside medications... it could react with any other meds you are on and create serious side-effects.

Well I wasn't on any other medication and seriously in pain after delivering twins naturally without epidural. The voltaren was a god send.I could barely walk for 3 days because of severe SPD.
The only answer I got from them was that I should see a Physio who would come 4 days later.I was gone home by then. Don't get me wrong I still think that for the price you pay QMH is brilliant but I didnt bring any pain killers the first time and was never given any thing else than Panadol. And yes I did ask.
I wasnt ready to do that the second time. I obviously had asked my private doctor before hand on what to bring and how to take them.My doc had actually given me some stronger meds but didnt use them.
