Dear all,

Hi, my name is Candy and going to be a first time mum in the forthcoming December. Know little about raising baby and delivery. I'm still wondering where to give birth in St. Paul in CWB or in Queen Mary in Pokfulam. Hard to choose between cost and benefit coz all public hospitals do not help parents to collect cord blood which is enriched with haematopoietic stem cells. These stem cells when infused back into the body, they can proliferate and replace a diseased or defective haematological and immunological system. Did anyone here do collect their babies cord blood?

I checked out the web site, and it mentions that we have to "allow ample time before the birth of your baby for your collection kit to be delivered" I'm due end July.. is that enough time...?

Also, approx how much did it cost? The costs arent mentioned in the site.
 
If you find it too costly, then you may wish to donate it to Red Cross. They come to the hospital to collect it for free.

As you may be well aware, if all is well with the baby, it is highly unlikely you would ever use the cord blood except maybe to help another child later on in life or if you donate it to Red Cross, help some other needy babies. If the baby has certain deficiency, his cord blood will not be of any good to himself.
 
You can ask them to send you a corporate brochure and it include the price there. I just got th Cryolife at home, if you really need to know the price, I can post it here. As long as I remember, the annual fee is HK$1,500 and the initial fee is about HK$10,000.

Rani, why do you choose Cryolife instead of the other? My doctor told me that there is only one private company here in HK do collect stem cell, ie Cryolife. Never heard of the Smart Cells but it seems cheaper than Cryolife, I will check for it.

Hi Rani,

I was wondering where you gave birth. Our baby's due in two months and we just got told that the QMH will not help us to collect cord blood.

Can anyone advice me on this?
