I've read that the umbilical stump can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks to drop off. Will onesies (bodysuits) be uncomfortable/unsuitable for the baby until the umbilical stump drops off? Do you think I'd need to buy some looser fitting tops for the baby as well? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Onesies are ok. Just fold down the top of the diaper.

Nothing really special. I think some Newborn diapers are actually made with a notch for the stump but generally you don't need to worry about it that much.
I found onsies that open and have snaps on the side much easier to put on that the usual one that you have to put on through the head. Newborns have no head control, so it's hard to dress them anything through the head.
My mother-in-law sent a lot of through the head onsies for my first. But my Chinese confinement lady refuse to dress my baby in that saying that it is inconvienent. This time around, with my second, I have stock up onsies that opens on the side for easy dressing.
I also prepare long gowns that open in the front or has side straps ( Janpanese Monk gown) would cover their legs for the first few days or weeks. Because of the stump, newborns don't wear pants until it falls off.

To each their own, but I have had no problem dressing my 2 babies in over the head onesies. They don't need head control for that.
After the second though, I do see the convenience of kimono style clothing for the newborns. But both my kids just wore onesies under footed pajamas for the first couple of months anyway. I never bought too many fancy outfits for them. Newborns look a bit ridiculous in them anyway, in my opinion

Check with Chickeeduck (a baby clothing store), Jusco and Yata department. They should have it. A few wet market streets in centeral also have it as I remember some mothers mentioned it in the forum.
From Jusco, I bought a few gowns that is open in the front with snaps.
Gowns are convinent at the begining for diaper changes. Newborns are mostly wraped in blankets and go through so many diapers a day. When you wear baby in gowns, you just have to upwrap the baby and pull up the gown for diaper changes. Then you pull the gown back down and warp baby up again. No need to put snap back under the crotch. When I think the baby needs another layer, I would add a vest for him on top of the gown.
Footed pajamas are great for holding the baby. So, his clothes are not all pull up. With gowns, after holding the baby for a while, his gown could all be up in his tummy. I found that we have to tidy it up for a bit.
But when the baby is screaming for not liking dipaer change, I don't like that i have so many snaps to put back to dress him again. Somehow, My helper and I often snapped it the wrong button, and then we have to go through it again.
