Is nappy rash cream necessary if no nappy rash?

Hi, just wondering whether you need to put nappy rash cream on baby's bottom every time you change nappies even if there is no nappy rash. I'm doing that but wondering if there are any side effects. If no, is there any creams that you recommend be rubbed on to baby's bottom to prevent nappy rash or just no creams necessary. Any advice welcome. Thanks!

i only put nappy rash cream when my baby had a rash...which was very rare. don't think you need to put any cream. my baby's bottom is still rash free!

only if there's a rash. if the rash is really bad, take the child to the dr. (my girl gets it at the drop of a hat and we've had to take her to the dr on a few occasions.)

our pediatrician recommended that if the bottom gets slightly red, no rash, just a little red, to use the mustela vitamin barrier cream. we use it our daughter goes to sleep when we know we won't be changing her diaper as frequently. almost 5 months and no nappy rash! i think changing the diaper more frequently is more important than the cream, in my opinion.

I use petroleum jelly when there is no rash, and a zinc cream when there is a rash. At night I use zinc cream (lots) and cover it with petroleum jelly(lots) as he goes all night without waking. We rarely get rashes.
