Is it ok to eat hairy crabs while breastfeeding?

don't think there is anything scientifically/nutritionally wrong with it (as the crab is cooked thru but is just very rich). i found that eating shellfish in general didn't agree with breastfeeding for my first but was ok with my second. i snuck in a couple of hairy crabs when breastfeeding both.

i guess in moderation it should be ok :)

It was in the press last year that the farmers were 'pumping' the crabs with hormones to promote breeding, hence many would discourage pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers from eating hairy crabs. Not sure if it's true, but I skipped these anyway, didn't want to take the chance :)

Hmm...don`t know about the amount of hormones, but if one was worried about that, they`d have to cut a whole lot of other foods out as well. like all generic meat and dairy for starters.

I ate half a hairy crab the other day (could not resist!) and everything seems normal after that. But if you're really worried, then skip it. Otherwise the worrying may take the joy of eating it.

I can't see any reason why eating hairy crabs would be a problem while breastfeeding.

If you are worried about allergens passing through the milk - the most likely foods to be a problem are the foods you and the baby's father are allergic to. If you have no problem eating the crabs then the baby is unlike to have a problem with you eating the crabs.

Enjoy your meal!
