International telephone calls

I have just been using PCCW for my international telephone calls to Australia (0060) and notice that their rates are very high - I was quite shocked with my last bill.

Just wondering what the alternatives are - what service does everyone else use to call internationally?

:thanks:

Hi,

If you aren't opposed to using your computer, international calls can be extremely cheap or free. I use Skype with a lot of my friends and family. It is free to download and use but does require that the person be online when you are. Another option is called Yahoo Voice. I use this alot to landlines. It costs me 1 cent (USD) per minute to call Canada and the states. It works really well. I have been using it for a couple of months and have spent a total of 10 dollars (USD). It too is free to download and you just add money with your credit card.

Good Luck

FYI - just checked Australia rates.. .018 cents per minute to landline and 18 cents to a mobile.

You can also try Hutchison Global Communication - prefix 0088. From memory, they charge you a fixed rate of around HK$60 per month for unlimited IDD calls to a number of countries (including Australia - land line calls only) at any time of the day, no differentiation between peak and non-peak times. If you call alot, it really saves u a lot of $$!!!

If you're with PCCW, get in touch with them and ask if they have a package. I have a package with them and I pay around 330 per month for certain number of mins to UK, Australia, Singapore, USA and I can't remember which other countries. And I can't remember how many minutes I have too. Sorry. But I call overseas almost every night and my bill hardly go over 330 unless hubby makes calls to India for work.

I use my mobile phone for calling NZ, US and UK. I have a People prepay IDD card and it costs 25 HK cnts per minute to land lines (and mobiles in the US). Means I can talk to NZ while killing time on the train etc.

We also use Skype or buy a phone card. The phone cards usually have a pretty good rate. The one we get to call the US is HK $45 and we get about 150 minutes. We just buy it at our local photo developing/Kodak place.
