I have to choose a gyn and it seems to be a lot of different aspects to be considered. I do know that I want to deliver at Matilda but I guess with the waitinglists you need to be with a DR who only deliveres there.

Which Drs only deliver at Matilda?
Of course I want a very good, nice, competent, friendly DR any recommendations??

Here are a few that deliver at the Matilda:

Dr Ghosh
Dr Lucy Lord
Dr Sally Ferguson
Dr Alex Doo

Dr. Arabinda Ghosh is a resident there and almost guaranteed to be able to get you a room.

My cousin changed her mind LAST MINUTE from going with a pre-booked caesarian to trying VBAC for her second baby and Dr. Ghosh was able to adjust to this without blinking an eye. This happened in September (when bookings were very tight) and Ghosh was fine with her cancelling her elective booking only two weeks before she was due for the surgery. She ended up having the baby naturally about two days from her due date and she was still able to get a private room on the birth day with no apparent problems.

I see Dr Patrick Chan, who works at the Matilda some of the time (that's how I met him, early pregnancy bleeding newly arrived in HK, phoned Matilda and saw Dr Chan an hour later), and he had no problem booking me in there. Subsequently changed plans and am at QMH. He's a nice guy and we feel very comfortable with him. Usually see him at his clinic in Central. You would have to ask him about his 'philosophy' on childbirth though, I haven't discussed it with him.

I just clicked that link that joshmum posted and it says effective 1st feb 2008! not 2009.

I delivered there 3 months ago and was not asked to pay a deposit.

Lav - I'm pretty sure that's a typo, I'm sure they mean Feb 2009 as when you just go to www.matilda.org they have a banner saying click here for details of the New Maternity Bookings procedure, which takes you to the link I posted.

I gave birth in April 2008 there and also didn't have to put down a deposit 4 weeks after I registered.

if it helps my doctor was able to get me a confirmed booking at the matilda at 6 weeks pregnant. i saw dr. alex doo.

Ladies, Since this'll bug me through the night...

Do you still have to pay the 20k deposit at Matilda if your insurance covers Matilda?

Hi Swedishmum,

I delivered in Matilda in last Aug and my gyn was also Dr Patrick Chan. He's the resident doctor in Matilda too and can easily get you a room (I also booked very late and he confirmed it right away when I first met him in his clinic). To me, he's very competent and a gentlemen who made me feel relaxed and comfortable during regular check up and the delivery. My husband also likes his philosophy too.

I understand there are lots of things to consider when choosing a "right" gyn. I would say I was very lucky to have Dr. Chan taking care of me during my pregnancy. If you would like to know more details about him and his contact, you may PM me. Glad to share my experience with you. :-)

Syl

I have a bed at Matilda (confirmed at 9 weeks, will deliver mid March) which my insurance fully covers and have been asked to pay the 20k. I guess they don't bother with the direct payment, but get the insurance co. to guarantee.

Syl, you might want to clarify it with the Matilda, as this $20K deposit up front is a new policy effective today so things might be different.

But when I delivered at the Matilda last April, they used to require a $20K deposit when you were admitted to the hospital (or a charge of that amt on a credit card). We however got our insurance company to provide a letter of guarantee to the Matilda outlining how much they would cover for the birth and this was sufficient in lieu of the deposit.

Hi Swedishmum,

I am 14 weeks pregnant and seeing Dr Alex Doo and got a confirmed booking at the Matilda when I was 9 weeks. He's a resident at the hospital also. I've been told I don't have to pay any deposit.

If you want a Doctor who is friendly with a good bedside manner, then I definitely recommend Dr Doo.

Good luck with everything.

I want Matilda

I am also pregnant due in July 09, Matilda is booked out until Aug 09, as far as I know you need to wait until either a miscarriage or someone cancels. My Dr also delivers at The Adventist hospital which I was able to get a place, I think the hospital is the major issue if you are looking for a gyno.

I went in for my follow up on the 4th and I was still waitlisted for Matilda, but apparently a little pressure is all that's needed to confirm a bed.

With the same confidence demonstrated last September, Dr. Lord reassured me that getting a bed would be ok. It only took her 3 days to prove it.
