My son has been exclusively BF for 14 months, he is now almost 18 months. I am still BF 3 times a day 6am, 7pm and 10pm. I would like to give up the 10 pm feed, just not sure how to do it.....any advice? I would like to stop BF by the summer....again looking for advice. My son is allergic to cow's milk and can drink soy and rice milk.

Thanks,

What time does your son go to sleep? I gave up the 10/10.30pm feed at about 8 months old. My baby's feeding routine was 7am milk, 8am breakfast, 11am lunch, 3pm milk, 5.30pm dinner, 6.45pm milk. By 8 months, my baby was having a good enough solid dinner at 5.30pm that she could get through from 7pm to 7am without needing another feed of milk. If your baby is going to bed around 7pm and not waking for the 10pm feed (ie: you are waking him for it) then I'd just try not feeding him at 10pm and see if he needs it. If he is waking at 10pm for a milk feed, then it is probably just a routine you need to change. Perhaps over a week or so you could change to a soy/rice milk bottle and slowly reduce the amount you give him?

Good luck.

Thanks SB2,

My son has milk at 6:45 and then goes down around 7:15 pm....he usually wakes up between 9-10pm for milk...we have not given him a bottle in months....so I will have to try soy/rice milk in a cup....I know I have to change this routine..any advice to make it as painless as possible...I hate to hear him cry ....

thanks again,

When my daughter was 15 months and was in the process of weaning from the breast, I would offer water instead. She took it and was happy so I didn't offer the breast. Giving her water also cut down on her night waking.
