How to get a U.S. passport for my baby who is born in Hong Kong?

I am a naturalized U.S. citizen, my husband is a greencard holder. I had recently given birth to my baby in Hong Kong. I want to know how I would apply for a U.S. passport and a Social Security number for her? Which step should come first?
Thanks!

for things as serious as passports, your best bet is to contact the consulate. they will give you the definitive answer.

My children were born in the US but we're not American. Most likely you'll need the birth certificate with appostille as a start. Their website is quite useful.

I did that for my girl last year, all u will need to do:
1) make appoint first, check in there website
2) complete the forms, i record it's about 2-3 forms
3) prepare passport photo for you baby
4) then interview with your family and baby
It will take around 2 months for you to get the passport.

We got ours when our daughter was 4 weeks old. We went as soon as the HK certificate was available (first thing in the morning, to get a spot in the queue) and we had scheduled an appointment with the consulate a day or two later. Just fill out the forms and they will mail it to you. Very simple process. Getting the HK birth certificate was the hardest part.

You can make appointment online for hk birth certificate too. It's painless.

very easy process, the website has clear instruction to guide you. they give you the passport and social security at the same time :)

angie, don't know if you got your answer but i just did this with my newborn (2 weeks old) last week. first, you need to register her birth in hk if you haven't done so already. then make an appointment with the u.s. consulate for a new passport (you can do it online). make sure you have all 3 applications (passport, ss card and certificate of birth abroad) filled out before you go. try to get an early appointment -- the consulate seems to get busier later in the day.
