How much does teething affect sleep?

Hi, just a quick question. My boy is 5 months old and I can feel a bump on his bottom gum and he is constantly chewing hard on everything so I'm pretty sure he's teething. Does teething affect babies sleep? I'm trying to figure out why he is sleeping so terribly (frequent wakings, tossing and turning in his cot for hours, whimpering occasionally and sometimes waking for 2 hours at night) and wondering if it has something to do with teething. Any thoughts from those who have gone through it?

Hi there,

Yes teething sure can affect sleep and like everything it seems to vary from baby to baby. Mine is not a good sleeper in general and when he is teething he just wakes more, sometimes crying very loudly. Usually when he cries out loudly at night the next day I see a teeth emerge. It seems that the most painful time is just before the teeth emerges. He also sometimes gets fever from teething.

Good luck!

Thanks for that! I can see a little tooth emerging now. Very exciting :) Did it affect your babies bowel movements?? Baylee has had really strange poos...

yep, can also cause diarrhea (sp?)...

for the waking, it would depend on how much pain or how uncomfortable your baby is finding this process.
