How much are you giving your helper for CNY?

We are new to HK and have had our helper for only a month. But we also want to treat her right -- she has been fantastic so far. How much are you giving your helper for Chinese New Year, and what would you advise we give?

Also, is the red packet amount for helpers typically a set amount or varies according to salary level? Do people give Christmas bonuses as well -- and if so should CNY money be more or less than the Christmas money?

TIA!

we will be giving our helper HKD200 as we do each year as she has been doing a good job looking after our daughter. Our relatives will most probably give her HKD40 as thats the usual 'rate'. Its really up to you and a show of your appreciation for her good work so far rather than how long she has been working for you. there is no fixed amount and we give her a HKD200 for her birthday, nothing for xmas.

Hi, we do not give our helper anything at CNY. We figure that we are not Chinese and she is not Chinese so prefer to give her a bonus at Christmas-time instead. On her birthday, the children give her a present (not cash). It is really up to you which you prefer and how much. I do keep a stack of red envelopes with $20 in them to give to the bus driver, guards etc over the CNY break and give a red envelope to my secretary, tea ladies etc at work.

We give our helper a bonus on the anniversary of her joining us. I give her a birthday present on her birthday, and at Christmas a few hundred dollars to have a nice meal (and usually bring her back some chocolate or something from the UK). Nothing at CNY really.

We split one months salary between Christmas and CNY- we figure this is in line with what is common in the work place here; a 13th month. That said in the past 5 years she has worked for us we have enjoyed an annual bonus and feel our lives are made much easier by having her around so want to share/reward that.

For her birthday my kids usually bake her a cake and at Christmas they may get her something small, box of chocolates etc

I think it is a very personal decision and do what you feel comfortable with.

As she's only started working for you, best to give her whatever you're comfortable with. From the replies you can see every family does something different. We tend to give cash for birthdays, CNY, Christmas, Diwali, + kids birthday.
