how heavy is your baby?

I've heard of babies lighter than your son :-)

Where is he on the baby health charts?

My baby is 15 months and about 13kg which is the very top of the scale, but he was a big boy right from the start - born at 4.1kg.

According to the latest WHO growth charts, http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/wfa_boys_0_5_percentiles.txt
A 20 month old boy who weighs 10Kg is on the 15 percentile. (This means that if you take 100 boys all 20 months old then there will be 14 boys lighter than your son and 85 heavier than your son.)

This sounds fine to me. My children are all between the 5th and 20th percentiles. Both my husband and I are on the 10th percentile.

What percentile are you and your partner on? This is usually the biggest indicator of where your child should be.

Best wishes,
SARAH

I don't know how heavy my third child is, he's five months. Whilst the weight charts are a useful indication of growth, they can also cause parents to obsess over which percentile there child is on. My take on it is, if your child is thriving and continues on roughly the same centile then everything is OK.

But I have heard some parents whose child has been steadily weighed on one centile, trying to get them heavier as they see this to be more healthy. The size of your baby is not only determined by how much you feed them, but also by their genetics, if the baby's parents are small framed, light people it's unlikely that they are going to be cruising around the 95th percentile.

Dear Aprilbaby,

I had a friend whose baby girl was still exclusively breastfed and was 28 lbs (12.7 kg) at 8 months ? this was off the weight chart, higher than the 99 percentile. But when she was three years old she only weighed 35 lbs (16 kg) ? which was about the 80th percentile.

So don?t be worried if your son?s growth slows down more than the norm over the next couple of years.

Best wishes,
SARAH

At one year my babies weighed 18 lbs (8.2 kg), 23 lbs (10.4kg), 22lbs (10.0kg) and 17lbs (7.7kg) ? can?t remember what they were at 20 months.

I haven't had mine weighed in a bit, but at the last weight they were

8 months 19.5 lbs (8.8 kilo)

2.5 years 26.5 lbs (12 kilo)

thanks for all your comfort!!!

yours are quite big... 8 mths 11kg and 16 mth 18kg, unbelievable !!!!!

i just have mine weighed today again, with a pair of quite heavy shoes and a drenched pampers on..9.9 kg.. the bw of my boy was 2.98kg,, which accroding to the who chart, he was on the 25%, and now, goes down to 5-15%...i am not sure if it is normal.

He was exclusively breast fed for the first 6 mths, then solid +BF till 1..then mainly BF+solid and 3-4 formula per wk. (cannot said no to formula due to his good appetite, i sometimes do not have enough bm espeically during my business trip)

sarah,
how to work out what percentile are we (my husband and I)?

My 15.5mth old is 8.9kg and 75cm tall. He was also a small baby at birth at 2.83kg, and exclusively breastfed with solids at 6mths. I agree that you shouldn't worry too much about the percentiles, look at the overall appearance and whether he appears happy and active.

My baby boy now 16 months old weigh about 13 kgs and height about 82cm. He is still exclusively breastfeed and solid. when he was born weight 2.9kg.

Hi

My little girl was around 7.8kg when she was 1 year old. Until her second birthday... she gained just one kilos... she's definitely off charts for her height and her age... but well she eats well... and both hubby and I were thin at the same age... so we accepted it this way...

One thing for you... around one year, if the baby is in the period where is really getting active ( walking, or crawling all day long) they frequently going down one curve...

So as long as your child he's eating well, that he's active and making progress, you should not worry about a fall from percentile...

at birth, she was 3.33kg, at 1 yr old 10kgs ( so happy she tripled her birthweight at 1 yr old, although her then ped said she was on the fat side?!!) at 18 mths, she was 12 kgs & her ped said she needs to cut down on what she eats!! she's a vegetarian (by her own choice & never had dessert)

she's now 22 mths & been staying around 13-14kgs for the past 3 mths. altho she sure feels heavier by the day. i read that they're suppose to only gain 2 kgs in the 2nd year of life??
