How hard can it be to see an OBGYN?!?!

I have called most of the OBGYNs recommended via here or my Mum's group in HK. I can't get an appointment to see any of them. They are either fully booked or too busy to take on patients going through the public system.
I have tried Dr Lord, Dr Ferguson, Dr Grace Cheung, Dr. Chan, Dr. Poddar, Dr. Lee... Anyone have any other recommendations of a decent OBGYN because this is getting seriously ridiculous. This will be my second child so I'm only after someone who I can see perhaps 3 x throughout the pregnancy.

Not asking for much I feel.

If you just want someone who will do additional scans and not much else, I'd recommend either:

a) Dr Cora Ngai, or
b) Dr Lam Yung Hang

Both of them are experts in prenatal diagnostics and have some of the best ultrasound equipment in HK. Dr Lam can provide you with DVD of ultrasounds with sound included. Not sure about Dr Ngai.

The wait to see Dr Ngai is significantly shorter than Dr Lam - and she can be a little abrupt at times. But she's VERY good at what she does.

I've seen both of them - Dr Lam in my first "normal" pregnancy (where I found him excellent, although the wait was ridiculously long and he was a bit impersonal) and Dr Ngai in my 2nd pregnancy where I needed her "prenatal diagnostics" expertise as my daughter had a congenital condition. Dr Ngai was mostly pretty sensitive and even gave me her personal cell number to call at any time. She was respectful of my decision not to terminate, even though she told me my baby might not survive. The scans that she did were of the highest quality and helped us to know what (non-lethal) condition my daughter did have before she was even born. She also diagnosed a condition that my friend had when around 3-4 other doctors had scanned and couldn't pick up. I have heard some reports of her being insensitive at times - but you can't fault her ultrasound technique!!

Anyway - hope you find someone soon!!

By Dr. Lee. do you mean Dr. Eric Lee?... I'm surprised! One of the reasons I liked going to him was because I could always get an appointment on weekdays (maybe in a day or two) though Saturdays were a challenge. Are you only looking on HK Island?

Try Dr Edmund Hon he is fantastic and I am having my second baby with him. Had the first with Dr Ghosh however the waits can be long. I have not had to wait more than 30 minutes with Dr Hon and he is very detailed and assuring spends quality time with this us. Had I know first time would have gone to him for baby # 1. Plus his charges are reasonable compared to the other expat Dr.

I used Dr Danny Kong. Offices in Central. I did the public hospital for the delivery and he was fine with that. At the time, a few years ago, it was fairly easy to get in. Could have changed now. Maybe best not to mention the public hospital choice until after you get the appointment?!

dr ngai was my doctor in QMH when i delivered my first almost 7 years ago. i did not like her manner at all. no way would i pay huge sums to see her privately. she didn't like to answer questions, didn't seem to have any sympathy at all.

would go for Dr Lam Yung Hang - had him for my 2nd and 3rd...waits for me were around 15-20mins which I find reasonable and normally I'd be out of the office within 30-40mins...always parked at the Cheung Kong Ctr and never had to pay more than an hour for parking! He doesn't speak much, but very caring and of course great at what he does. He detected at 35wks that my sons right kidney had "back wash" (don't recall the technical term) and sure enough it's something that we're still trying to "fix" now at the age of 2mths. When my LO was in hospital for 3 weeks, he personally called me to see how things were with my son...hard to believe someone would do that - personally i was very touched.

You know - I have heard this about her but she was quite nice to me really... granted at the time she was telling me that my baby might have a lethal condition so maybe in those situations she's a bit more sensitive?? She also spent a lot of time talking with me and answering questions - I think that our first appointment was probably an hour long... and when she couldn't get all the scans she needed in that appointment (baby in the wrong position), she had us come back the following day and didn't charge us for that appointment at all.

hopefully her attitude has improved then from when she worked in the public sector.

i cried and screamed through my entire emergency c-section performed by her... the epidural didn't take and i felt the entire procedure! not one word of compassion was forthcoming from her... i almost felt like she didn't care/didn't believe me and my agony.

What an awful experience Carang! I've called Dr Christine Choy and managed to get an appointment for next week. She actually could fit me in tomorrow but I'm free next week being half term. I'm also going to try a few of the other suggestions too.

Thank you everyone!

Have to second cxflygirl. Dr. Hon has great bedside manners (provide detailed answers, uses common sense, gives sound advice, etc) and I never had to wait more than 10-15 mins even on a Saturday. Well except once throughout my entire pregnancy, we booked an earlier than usual appointment at 9.30am and he was delayed by his hospital rounds. His nurses, especially Kelly, were really wonderful as well!

A third recommendation for Dr Edmund Hon. Have been seeing him throughout my current (twin) pregnancy and he has been great, even when I called him in a panic on a Sunday night! Kelly runs the practice very well.

I can understand why you would recommend against her after such a horrible experience!!

she was silent through the entire procedure... i was very lucky to have a fantastic anesthesiologist. he and his assistant spent most of the procedure drying my eyes and wiping my runny nose (from crying). it was a terrifying experience.

after that, i am actually surprised i went for #2. thank god, they decided to give me general anesthesia for that one (and dr ngai wasn't around anymore).

Glad that she is better now. I have Dr Ngai as well. She was quite supportive of my choice to have a natural birth. But in the end we had a emergency c-section. She was very assuring and calm, and that helped in the sudden decision to c-section

This info may be a little late but I am seeing Dr Felix Wong at Central. He has returned to HK after a 20 year stint as Professor at Sydney Uni. I have been seeing him while trying to fall pregnant & he actually phoned me to check how I was after my dose of Clomid! Any time I have popped in he has been able to see me which is amazing (in fact he hasn't charged me twice as the consults were so short)! I think as he is new his books are quite open. I find him really friendly and open (unlike my Obstetrician back in Brisbane). We have just found out we are (finally!) pregnant so I will continue to see him.
His details are

I saw Dr. Doo early on in my pregnancy and decided to switch to another Dr.

Reasons:
There were very long waits (1-2 hours, even when his office called and asked me to come in later than my appointment time)
He seems very competent but not particularly warm or excited for us which I was looking more for since this is my first baby (Dr. Grace Cheung is fantastic in this way!)
Dr. Doo does alot of fertility work and seems to prioritize those clients over others for getting into Matilda (i was told i wouldn't get in to matilda, even though i saw him at 6 weeks and was suggested to book into st. paul's hospital. subsequently, got into matilda with another dr. a month or so later.)

Good luck!

Like a few others have said Dr Edmund Hon is fantastic. I was seeing Dr Philip Ho who I also think is amazing, he is professional and very calm under pressure. Dr Ho had to go away the day after I gave birth and I saw Dr Hon for the next 4 days or so and his bedside manner was great, answered all my questions and was so nice and caring. I definitely recommend either one of them.

I had Dr Philip Ho for both my kids, and he is great. I do not know if he takes patients going to the public system. Dr Ho and Dr Hon share the same clinic and their nurse Kelly is great. You can call to enquire: 28992293
