I am 7 months pregnant and am getting very anxious. Would anyone please be kind enough to provide information on what i should pack incase i go into labour or need to go to the hospital. Give me a list of everything as i am worried i may forget something important. Thank you very much.

the contents of your bag will depend on which hospital system you are using i.e. public or problem.

for public - i would suggest checking Queen Mary's website. if you are going private, your doctor will provide a list but I also think their is a list on the Annerley midwives website.

at 7 months though... i would really relax otherwise you will pack and repack at least a dozen times!!!

good luck. regards,

There are many threads on this topic if you search this website. Like Tracey Nicole wrote, it matters if you are going public or private. Also, you will wind up changing your mind countless times if you pack at 7 months. I didn't pack until the day of delivery and was fine. Babies don't pop out spontaneously especially if this is your first. Check out the thread below.

Good luck.

if i am giving birth in a public hospital what are the rules on the dad being there? can he stay overnight? Is he able to wait outside the room whilst im sleeping? Any information would be great thanks.

on this question, you are also well recommended to check with the hospital you are delivering at as each hospital has its own rules.

you feel anxious to me which is understandable. in preparation and to reduce your concerns, perhaps take a site tour of the hospital and ask for as much information from your doctor as you can (they generally have lots of hand outs for you to read).

if you have not done so, I would also make a preference on the type of birth you want and write a birth plan. To find samples and templates... surf the web.

The above things all assisted me so hope the advice assists you.

take care, tnb

agreed - check with hospital to see what they provide and adjust accordingly. I would begin thinking about what you might need at around 8 months.

When I packed, I found that the below were most helpful for me (it also depends how long you will be in the hospital):
nightshirts (2)
nursing bras (if you plan on nursing)
favorite snacks (dried fruits etc...)
2 large bottles of water
socks
my own pillowcases
boppy pillow to nurse with
toiletries
baby clothing

Your Per-Packed Luggage to Hospital: (got from Ar chi co store)
Mother:
Identity card / relevant doc
Follow -up card
Anternatal book
A cup
Accessories for morning and evening toilet
Tissue paper
Slippers
Maternity pads and belt cone roll of 1 cotton bandage
Brassiere
Underpad ( protective sheet)
Mesh pants
Cleansing bottle( wound cleansing)
Coins or telephone card

Baby list
New born diapers
Cotton wool
Baby Wipes
Big Towel
Baby's first outfit for check out
receiving blanket
Your Milk formular sealed box (for mom's that expect c-section)

I will deliver in private hospitals so some of the things will already be provided by hospital. If you going to public ones do bring all your things with you.

Enjoy packing! i need to pack mine too ;)

One thing I'd like to add, if you are giving birth in a public hospital (and maybe even the private hospitals here in HK) I recommend bringing ice packs and baby diapers--but not for the purpose you might think. You may have been told to bring post-partum pads for bleeding but when I gave birth I had some perineal bruising so the clever nurses took a baby diaper, cut it open horizontally and took a ice pack (one of the ones you twist to activate--disposable) and put it inside--the diaper is much more absorbant and softer than the post-partum pads and the ice pack provided a lot of comfort and relief. Also on my list are a topical pain relieving spray such as Dermoplast or Lanacaine that can be sprayed on any sensitive areas--it's cooling, doesn't sting and relieves pain.

Hi MLBW,

Thank you so much for your recommendation. May I ask where you get these type of ice packs from? Also where can I get pain reliving spray from, does any pharmacy sell it? Thanks again
